I had the great good fortune of taking a course in person with Jane, and I can tell you that not only is this book a delight -- with absolutely wonderful ideas for celebrating the turn of the wheel -- but Jane herself is the real deal. She is a woman of spiritual depth, learning and wisdom -- and yet she doesn't take herself too seriously and does a lot of heartfelt laughing. And that's the mark of a truly reliable spiritual teacher, right? My women's spiritual circle used her Yule ritual pretty much exactly as it is in the book, and many of us felt it was one of the most powerful we'd ever done. I love that her ideas and thinking about rituals -- and their significance -- is not "fluffy bunny." In my view, ritual is an important time to experience and re-align ALL of the self, not just the light parts, but all of the parts loved and respected and nurtured equally. Jane's book is an excellent, balanced guide in that work.Oh, and the writing is very good as well!

Outstanding guidelines for creating rituals.

The author is so creative and imaginative! I love her accounts of the traditions and it is well put together.

a+++++

Great information!

This was a wonderful book. Lots of information about the different holidays as well as other celebrations. Thoughtful ideas as well.

Another good book to have in your collection if you do rituals. This one got my creative juices flowing that had been blocked for a few yrs.

Came in good condition. Mint. No problems I see. Very insightful book.

I bought a Phillips Soup Maker and was looking for more recipes so I bought this book. The recipes are not suitable for the Philips model soup maker so the quantities have to be refigured completely. I was disappointed but chose not to return it...I may have to use my instanpot for most of them or refigure the quantities for my Philips....

Great little blender. I made soup and it worked great . Love the easy receipes and it’s done in a snap. I will use the soup maker more in the cooler season. It’s just a great blender and the price was good. I will use for smoothies next now that it’s so hot.

Use it at least twice a week. Great soup in 30 minutes.

I like the fact that along with the metric amounts they give the standard American measures!

This book contains great soup making recipes.

The Beekeeper's Lament: How One Man and Half a Billion Honey Bees Help Feed America, by Hannah Nordhaus

Review

“A fascinating read from cover to cover.” (Associated Press)“Bees are amazing. That’s the first reason to read The Beekeeper’s Lament, journalist Hannah Nordhaus’s rewarding account of migratory beekeeping and the mysterious scourge stalking the domestic bee population… It’s metaphorical and poetic, elegiac and somehow sad.” (Christian Science Monitor)“The Beekeeper’s Lament is at once science lesson, sociological study, and breezy read….A book about bees could easily descend into academe, but the author settles for nothing less than literature.” (Boston Globe)“Nordhaus, an award-winning journalist, weaves a dramatic tale of how and why beehives and bees themselves are threatened by everything from mites to moths to bee thieves.” (Washington Post)“The book is a rich mix of head and heart.” (Minneapolis Star Tribune)“Echoing Rachel Carson’s 1962 attack on the effects of pesticides, Silent Spring, Nordhaus explores this fascinating subject, providing long overdue recognition to the beekeeper and their task as stewards of a species.” (Financial Times)“A fascinating peek into the precarious business of keeping the nation’s crops pollinated.” (Smithsonian)“Some of the best narrative and storytelling I’ve had the pleasure of reading since Rebecca Skloot’s The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks...You must read this book.” (Maggie Koerth-Baker, Boing Boing)“A remarkable book….Nordhaus uses a somber, lyrical writing style to make bees into just about the most fascinating subject you’ve ever encountered while at the same time crafting an elegiac metaphor for the contingency of modern American life.” (The Millions)“A graceful, informative, and engaging book.” (Hill Rag)

From the Back Cover

The honey bee is a willing conscript, a working wonder, an unseen and crucial link in America's agricultural industry. But never before has its survival been so unclear—and the future of our food supply so acutely challenged. Enter beekeeper John Miller, who trucks his hives around the country, bringing millions of bees to farmers otherwise bereft of natural pollinators. Even as the mysterious and deadly epidemic known as Colony Collapse Disorder devastates bee populations across the globe, Miller forges ahead with the determination and wry humor of a true homespun hero. The Beekeeper's Lament tells his story and that of his bees, making for a complex, moving, and unforgettable portrait of man in the new natural world.

This book is fantastic. If you're thinking of dabbling in beekeeping as a hobby, this is a must-read. Also, if you're slightly geeky you'll really enjoy it. The author does a great job of explaining the history of beekeeping and focuses on one beekeeper in particular. She also delves into the plight of the honeybee with background on genetics, disease, pesticides and the many facets of beekeeping. I was really interested in the genetics component as that is my background - she does a great job of explaining the science of it without being too technical for the average person. The book is often funny and sad - overall, a great read!

I really enjoyed reading this book. The author does a great job looking at both the micro and macro effects of the beekeeping industry and she also provides background to how the colony works. Among other things, the author spends some time discussing all the calamities the bees face and how in the recent past the bees have been put against so many different environmental catastrophes and that bees need beekeepers as much as we need them. The author transmissions effectively from one topic to another. This topic, so effectively covered in this book, is so vital to our agriculture and the author writes in such layman terms that this book can be read by any beginner and those just taking an interest in how bees influence our every day lives.

Reinforced my quest to reduce / eliminate use of chemicals in the yard, as well as to plant more native plants for our native bees! This book focuses on the beekeeping industry - however it holds implications for native populations as well. We all need to work together to demand organic and sustainable farming processes. Additionally, we need to move towards eliminating chemical pesticides and herbicides that impact bees. Where are we without bees? Starving.

I've loved bees since I was a child. My grandfather had a small farm in Nevada, and when I was a child we would visit in the summer time. I had free range of the property, and I roamed far and wide with his Australian shepherd Queenie for my companion. When my mother would worry because she hadn't seen me or hours, he would reassure her that Queenie would look after me, and she did. When they would come looking for me, nine times out of ten, they would find me near the bee hives. I would lie for hours feet away from the entrance, just watching the bees come and go. I wasn't worried about being stung, and I never was. When I was visiting my aunt and uncle in California, i learned that one of their near neighbors was a professional beekeeper named Knoefler, and there was a street named for him in the small suburb of Riverside CA where they lived. As an adult in the 1970s I took apiculture classes at the community college near Palm Springs and learned that professional beekeepers were leasing hives for pollination at the rate of $75/month/hive. Hives were visible in the fields and on trucks being moved from crop to crop. When the bees started dying, I followed the story avidly, and the threat of Africanized bees to the entire industry is playing out in the headlines. When this book turned up on sale for $1.99, I couldn't resist. I'm glad I didn't even try. I was hoping this in-depth examination of apiculture would have some answers. It does, but they aren't simple, easily addressed answers. As with many similar problems, the causes and treatments are complex, multi-faceted and not easily identified. For example, certain pesticides have been identified as the culprit, and there was a Facebook campaign for a while urging people to put pressure on Home Depot to stop selling it and to stop using it in their gardens. This same pesticide is widely used in Australia with little or no detrimental effect on Australian bees. Mites, stress, and poor nutrition have all been identified as contributing to the die off of colonies.I was pleased to see a passing mention of the old neighbor Knoefler in the book. That sealed my trust in the author's research and increased her credibility with me. This is a writer who has done her homework. I recommend the book highly to anyone interested in these fascinating creatures and their contribution to our food supply.Words I learned from this book:fungible: goods or commodities that are interchangeablegallinaceous: of or relating to an order (Galliformes) of heavy-bodied largely terrestrial birds including the pheasants, turkeys, grouse, and the common domestic chickensenescent: the state of being old

First, this book is NOT just for those who are "into" bees, although after you read it, you WILL be! Here's a question: How much honey does a bee produce in her lifetime, which is about six weeks? (You'll have to wait until the end of the review to find out.) The writing style is engaging and informative without being dry and John Miller, who is the wax that holds the story together, will make you appreciate, if not love, the whole idea of honey and honeybees. Did you know that hives don't just sit in one place all the time, but get shipped all over the country to pollinate all those things you love? I heard the author, Hannah Nordhaus, on NPR and bought the book based on that and it has been a delightful experience, you might even say "the bee's knees"! Seriously, I really think you'll love it and want everyone else to read it, so I hope you'll give it a try. And if you guessed that a honeybee produces a pint or even a cup of honey in her lifetime---sorry. Her life's work adds up to 1/12th of a teaspoon!

A timely and informative book suitable for a wide readership. It could be subtitled The Life and Times of John Miller, Commercial Beekeeper. Miller is a character and his presence breathes life throughout the pages of the book -- Nordhaus must have realized she had a gem in Miller, around which she could build a worthy and entertaining book. Miller is descended from a long line of beekeepers and struggles annually, as do all beekeepers, to keep his thousands of colonies healthy as they face drought, disease and pestilence on a number of fronts. Nordhaus expertly weaves the history of beekeeping into her book -- beekeeping has never been easy, and is far more difficult today than for past generations. All successful beekeepers are hard workers or they wouldn't survive and Miller is no exception. Miller is an atypical beekeeper in that he is gregarious, quirky, smart (both street-smart and book-smart), with an off-beat sense of humor that helps him survive the inevitable mishaps that occur in his profession.Highly recommneded whether you know anything about bees or not.

If you were worried about how to manage toilet needs in a SHTF situation where the normal facilities were not functioning, worry no more! This book tells you exactly what you need to know about how to deal with feces and urine when the toilet doesn't work. The author goes into great detail about the specifics of composting human excretions. If you have just a little know-how and a little space to set up a composting bin arrangement, you will be able to dispose of the necessary products in a way that is not too physically difficult and that will not result in odors which might annoy your neighbors. It's important, because when the toilets quit working, everyone is going to be faced with the same problem. It's comforting to know that there are sensible solutions that actually work. Preppers will be interested, and really everyone should be, unless they have their heads buried in the sand. Buy this book! You won't be sorry!

Wow. MIND BLOWING information. Goes way beyond 'humanure' and truly is an education in ecology, microorganisms, composting, the current systems, easy solutions and more. Extremely informative, inspiring and easy to read. Everyone should read this who cares about our environment and wonders what more they can do to ease their footprint on this planet...or better yet to HELP the planet with our biproducts ( It's NOT WASTE if it's used properly!) I'm So thrilled to own an copy. Wish I had a million dollers to buy one for everyone I know.

After getting a bunch of free advice from the book's website, I decided to stop being a cheapskate and buy it to support the author.I've just started the great humanure experiment with my newly made compost bin, so I'll have to wait a couple of years to see how it all shakes out. I've already been composting #1 for a few months and I'm working up the nerve to progress to #2! I can say that #1 is no problem; I've been doing it inside the house with no odor problems at all, and taking it outside is not the disgusting chore I feared it might be.I do find it hilarious that there's a little star on the cover saying "Amazon.com Category Bestseller". What category is that?

This book actually changed our lives. Whoever thought a book about sh*t would not only be very informative and interesting, but funny too. For a long time both my husband and myself have been feeling guilty about all the water wasted every time we flush a toilet. Deep inside we knew it was wrong, and Joseph Jenkins, with this book, showed us another way. We are 5 years into this now, and our garden is blooming and we are feeling more connected with Mother Earth. The nutrients that sustain us that came from the Earth, go back to the Earth, as it should be.

Great book. Well written. Starts off very slow, somewhat too many facts to follow since I tend to be a slower reader, but once Jenkins gets into the discussion of composting I couldn't put it down. I was a little nervous, based on reviews I'd read about the mention of Christianity in regards to the progression of sanitation, but I actually found that portion of the book very interesting. Straight forward information on how to begin composting your humanure. While I haven't gone that far yet, I've started a compost pile of organic refuse from my kitchen and lawn based on his recommendations. Must read if you're interested in compost, water waste, and helping the environment.

EXCELLENT read! This book has saved me from an expensive mistake: buying a composting toilet system from Home Depot (for around $2000), when I can build my own for a tiny fraction of the cost. Thank you Joseph C. Jenkins! And thank you for such an entertaining read, too. I don't understand why anyone would find anything about this book offensive (like some of the negative reviewers), it's a wonderfully written source of great information.

I think this is a must-read for the environmentally conscious. Given our water situation, flushing drinking-grade water down the toilet is simply no longer an option. At the very least, we should reuse graywater (e.g., from the washer, sinks…for flushing). I am not sure how I feel about composting my own waste, but I will start experimenting with that and report back (the sawdust project). It requires having the space to do it (room for two compost piles of about 1 cubic yard each, and probably some distance from living quarters (not to mention wells). Which makes this a fairly restricted proposition/solution (for more rural areas). But just reading the first chapter should be required to raise awareness of the urgency of the problem human waste represents (no pun intended).

From the Back Cover

THE REVISED AND UPDATED BESTSELLING ANALYSIS OF HIGHER EDUCATION'S IMPACT "In the tradition of the two previous editions, this is the quintessential resource for the current generation of scholars, graduate students, and policy makers about whether, how, and why college matters." —George D. Kuh, director, National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment "Thankfully, the scholarly discourse on higher education is intentionally moving toward important questions that examine student outcomes in ways that inform pressing, but often ignored, public policy questions. This volume is an important step for affirming what we know, and identifying what we need to learn about the programs and services provided to students." —James T. Minor, Deputy Assistant Secretary, U.S. Department of Education "For the past three decades, How College Affects Students has been one of the most vital resources in higher education. This edition continues the tradition of outstanding research on the college experience. A must-read for both student affairs and higher education professionals." —Kevin Kruger, president of NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education "As too much higher education rhetoric proliferates across our nation with little or no grounding in scholarship, the authors of this book have given us a gift. They offer an exemplary evidence-based synthesis of the college student experience. Whether examining student retention, persistence, attainment, earnings or quality of life outcomes, this book gives us a terrific collection of peer-reviewed studies by topical areas. The authors also do an extraordinary job to help us understand how college shapes the character, morals and values of our communities and, thus, our nation. They have clearly made the case – based in scholarship – that college matters now more than ever." —Martha Kanter, former United States Under Secretary for Education

This third volume of How College Affects students is a must-have resource for students, scholars, and practitioners of higher education and all who wish to engage in evidence-based practice. The authors extend the powerful legacy of Pascarella and Terenzini in this book. As John Braxton (2016) wrote in his review published in the Journal of College Student Development, "The scholarly and practice communities concerned with the growth and development of undergraduate college students owe each of them an immeasurable degree of gratitude for their indispensable work of stockpiling knowledge regarding the effects of college on students" (p.1061). I concur wholeheartedly..

This is a comprehensive compilation of research on the impact of college on students. I'm sure all of the important research is included, and there must be little if anything that is left out. I give the book 5* for comprehensiveness. If you want to find any kind of research on how college affects students, this book is where to start and probably also where to finish.Comprehensiveness is the book's main attribute. The authors do not fully synthesise or draw conclusions. In many parts it is barely more than an annotated bibliography. These authors, having studied virtually everything on the impact of college, are in an excellent position to say how a student can best take advantage of college in its current form, how higher ed should be reformed, and how to design new institutions of higher ed for maximum efficiency and effectiveness. But there is little if any discussion of those issues. What little such discussion exists is hard to read, thanks to the very academic writing style in this book. I give it 1* for bad writing and blowing a great opportunity to say something significant. To be fair to the authors, they surely intended this book as a survey of research for an academic audience, and did not intend this book for laypersons like me.This book makes it clear that, despite vast amounts of research, we still don't know much about how college affects students. There are two major problems. First, as evident from the book, all research is based on comparing people who choose to go to college versus people who choose to do something else; since those two groups are likely to be different in many, unknown ways, one cannot attribute a difference in outcomes to college. The only reliable way to tell how college affects students is to compare groups of people who are known to be similar before college, but with some of the group attending and some not attending college for reasons that are clearly unrelated to the potential outcomes (for example, if they were randomly assigned to go to college or not, but that's just not going to happen in reality). The clearly book notes this problem (self-selection) with research on higher ed and acknowledges that any conclusions are limited. For example:+ "No studies reported in this volume included research designs of college-going versus non-college-going students".+ "No literature was uncovered that addressed cognitive development of college students versus non-college goers. As a result, we were not able to calculate the net effects of college-going..."+ "College students and other adults may change for all kinds of reasons, including normal maturation and human development, that have nothing to do with college."+ "Few studies in this volume provide sufficiently strong evidence to estimate the impact of attending college as opposed to maturation or other influences."I think that the authors are in some places, however, a bit too ready to conclude that positive differences are due to college (eg, note the book's sub-title), even after they clearly acknowledge the limitations of the research methods.Second, a lot of the research is based on the perceptions of students rather than on objective testing; for example, researchers administer a questionnaire asking students how much they think they're learning rather than testing them for actual learning. One of the most solidly established findings in social science is that people are very poor judges of themselves. It's surprising that scholars of education could be so frequently using such a flawed research method. I did not find any criticism in the book of research methods based on the perceptions of students versus actually testing their knowledge. While this book is highly valuable as a comprehensive compilation of research on how college affects students, it has little value beyond that. Somebody else could use this book as the foundation to write a good book for the general public on what we actually know about how college affects students and how students can best take advantage of college. Peter Capelli does a nice job in his book Will College Pay Off? even though his book is about more than just the effects of college. For a layperson interested in how college affects students, I recommend Peter Capelli's book instead of this one.

Very comprehensive collection of studies done on many areas that can be affected by the college student's experience.

Great Book!

There is no better synthesis of research in the field of Higher Education. There is nothing anywhere near this comprehensive. There is nothing even remotely this respected, this authoritative, this complete. It's hard to overstate how seminal the previous editions of this book have been; this edition proudly follows in that tradition. If you have volumes 1 and 2, you pretty much need volume 3. If you're new to being a researcher or administrator in the college landscape, this 3rd edition is the best (and most current) place to start.Part of that power comes not only from the amount of articles gathered together here, but the rigor of vetting of those articles. Time and again, I came across a study I hadn't hear of before, even in areas I'm very well read in; in many cases, important caveats are built in to the paragraphs/chapters. If a study had inconclusive findings, or an odd methodology, this book takes that into consideration and explains it.There's also a real sense of cohesion here. Themes in the moral development section come up again when residence life research is explored. The section on economics and finance is not disconnected from the cognitive outcomes work The effect is of both specificity and scope: you get the sense, as you read, of deep-dives into particular areas of interest without ever losing sight of the big picture (the impact of college on students).Importantly, this book is clear on its focuses on diversity and inclusion as well. The moral imperative to make college work for all student populations runs throughout the research in this book and throughout the authors' explanations of that research. This book is a vital tool in the fight to make higher education the engine of cultural change it can be.For higher education students, you're guaranteed to have a good start on any quantitative lit review by using this book. For practitioners, you're guaranteed to find some angle on your area of expertise you hadn't thought of before. An essential reference for anyone's shelf (or kindle).

I saw this book at a local store, thought it looked good, and got it a lot cheaper on Amazon! The cover makes it look kind of ordinary, but the recipes I've tried so far are REALLY good!!! I live in New Mexico and know what good southwestern food is. I've already made the spicy sausage soup twice. I used vegetarian sausage, added chopped kale, and put in a LOT of green chile - and it was one of the most delicious things we've ever had! I made recipes from this book for a whole week, and they were yummy and I even lost weight because they're so healthy! I like the authors' frequent use of lime juice and cilantro - makes everything better! The only recipe that I tried that we didn't like was the crema de chile poblano soup - it came out really bland. Also, lots of recipes call for chipotles in adobo, but I couldn't detect any of this in the final product, so I'd probably leave them out in the future.

I bought this recipe book as a gift for a friend at a National Park in Utah, and after reading through the recipes, I knew I would have to buy myself a copy when I got home. I haven't been disappointed. I was born and raised in Texas and appreciate the Southwest flavors, but quite a few of these recipes are new and authentic flavors I haven't tried before now. All of the recipes are simple and easy to follow and every single one has turned out better than expected! This is also the first cookbook that I've actually read the comments and descriptions about the dishes throughout the book. Usually, I just focus on the recipes and directions. I hope you enjoy this cookbook as much as I have!!

Twice a year I make my own tamales and it takes 2 days. That is the kind of cookbook I was looking for. I cook from scratch, aside from buying things like corn tortillas, and was looking for a cookbook that came close to authentic cusine. This cookbook is not for the from scratch home cooks as they use way to many processed products. I had to make my own taco seasoning so that I know that MSG is not included, most of their recipes call for store bought taco seasoning which I can't use. I really do not like recipes that call for adding cans of stuff and some meat then cook. Really disappointing.

This cookbook has plenty of beautiful pictures to capture the cook's interest. Its strongest quality is the narrow focus on Southwestern cuisine--a welcome deviation from the ususal canned soup and chicken crock pot cookbooks. There are many flavorful, restaurant quality recipes which are clear and easy to follow. Many recipes in this book do not require browning of meat before adding it to the slow cooker. This is a plus if you want a collection of recipes that involve dumping items in the crock before running off to work. And if you host football parties and the like, some of these dishes would just be perfect for a manly, meat-loving crowd. I would describe the recipes as flavorful and not overly spicy (though if you want to kick up the heat, you can do so). I am able to make these dishes in a standard 4 quart crockpot. A few of them I think you could make in the cute little 1 1/2quart crockpots. The ingredients are not difficult to find in my grocery store. I now keep canned habanaro chilies and green chilies in my pantry. To the extent you are called upon to roast particular types of peppers, you can save prep time the next time around by roasting several peppers and freezing them. I like to plate these dishes on large serving platters, spread out grandly with a salad and a few blue corn tortilla chips, just like a fine restaurant meal.

Great cookbook! So many delicious recipes!

I HAVE OWNED THIS BOOK FOR ABOUT 4 YEARS. I WAS AND CONTINUE TO BE IMPRESSED WITH HOW LITTLE TIME IS INVOLVED, THAT I PURCHASED ANOTHER FOR MY DAUGHTER FOR CHRISTMAS THIS PAST YEAR (09).IT IS EASY, AND THE MEALS ARE GREAT. I ESPECIALLY LOVE THE FACT THAT YOU CAN JUST PUT THE INGREDIENTS INTO A CROCK POT,SET IT, AND WALK AWAY TO DO FUN THINGS WHILE A GREAT MEAL IS COOKING. ANYONE WITH LITTLE TIME IN A DAY CAN DO THIS. YOU WILL LOVE IT AS I DO!!

This book is filled with delicous easy to prepare meals. I like the "set it and forget it" feature of slow cooking. Not only that but the whole house becomes perfumed with the aroma of the food. Although as I add on a few years, I have to temper the amount of hot chilis that go into the food.

Gave this as a gift, so don't have a review on completed recipes, but they are a very nice variety with common ingredients. Looks like they would be tasty. And ... couldn't be easier! Thank you slow cooker!
