The Emotion Thesaurus is in a special pile of "resources I can't write without" that sits next to my laptop. I bought this after I finished my novel and needed to vary my characters' actions. My characters sighed and breathed and nodded thoughtfully a lot. The thesaurus was so helpful. I looked up the emotion a character felt and found a long list of physical actions, internal sensations, mental responses to illustrate that emotion--as well as evidence that the character has felt the emotion for a long time, what the emotion may escalate to, and evidence the emotion is being suppressed. For example, let's say my character is conflicted. Instead of taking a deep breath or holding his breath (which is a crutch when I write), the thesaurus gives me better options. A physical action may be opening/closing of the mouth as if struggling to find the right words. An internal sensation may be tightness in the chest. A mental response may be feeling guilt because others will be negatively affected by the character's decision. Evidence my character has been conflicted for a long time might be sleeplessness. Feeling conflicted may escalate to feeling overwhelmed (I can then look up overwhelmed in the thesaurus). My character may joke around and avoid the subject as he suppresses his conflicted feelings. The thesaurus helps me visualize my character and get inside his head, so I can write with more interest and freshness. I highly recommend this "can't-write-without" resource.

*Note (7/13/12): I located the linked navigation a while back, and it's actually very well done. Excellent. Forgot to update the review.I'm rounding up because my only complaint is that I couldn't find a linked list/index to go from one entry to the next, back, or otherwise. I am going to search around the book to see if it does indeed exist and to see if it merely escaped me on my first pass. I'll knock off half a star for that, but I'm going to round up because this truly is a wonderful writing aid. (I'll amend my review if I locate it or if someone points it out.)A wide variety of emotions are given in this book, each of the entries supplying information on the overall effects each emotional state has on people, from what others might notice or see to what a person might feel inside. Thus, it's a wonderful tool for examples in any point of view and wonderfully supports the modern, accepted style: third person limited. However, this tool could just as easily be used for any style or point of view.In my opinion, this guide could be useful to both new and experienced writers of fiction. For the former, this is an amazing resource for learning how to write convincing characters and see how emotions translate into writing (then, hopefully, provoking sympathy, empathy, or whatever feeling you wish to evoke in the reader). For the latter, I would say that this can easily be a go-to reference for experienced writers to shake things up a bit and to avoid the long hours of research it would require to do the legwork already done in this guide. I've loaded this book onto my Kindle, and it's ready to go, along with my thesaurus, dictionary, and other reference material. This is one book that will be permanently loaded onto my device.

It is unique in what it offers -- a compendium of emotions with attached subcategories to show how they might be used on the page in a believable manner. This must have been a grueling work to compile, drawing upon, as they mention, other writers in a critique circle.Two uniformly structured pages are devoted to one particular emotion shown in caps at the top of the left page. Each word is followed by a short definition. The first subcategory is "Physical signals" followed by examples of about 30 words or short phrases. The next subcategories are "Internal Sensations," "Mental Responses," "Cues of Acute or Long-term Determination," "May Escalate to (other emotions and page numbers)," and "Cues of Suppressed Determination."Writer's tips are provided at the bottom of each right page, supplying advice on how to present or utilize these emotions in a believable manner.This is not, as I mentioned at the outset, an easy work to read through because it does not flow with the continuity if a typical text. Jean Renoir (1894–1979), the son of the painter Auguste Renoir, was born in Paris, grew up in the south of France, and served as a cavalryman and pilot during World War I. As a memoir of interactions with his father, this is enjoyable; but please don't consider it a biography. I'm a lover of the whole Jean Renoir film library, which I have collected over the years, and, of course, Papa was a genius. Nevertheless, this is only for the truly committed. There is nothing of critical artistic content here, but many fond memories. I'm still waiting for an enjoyable biography of Auguste's early days of poverty, love affairs, and impressionist genius, but I haven't seen any to recommend. The extensive biography by Barbara White is a huge disappointment; mostly a collection of letters from his 40's on. The novel "Luncheon of the Boating Party" by Vreeland is terrific, though. Read this before your trip to the Phillips Collection in Washington!

If you are a lover of Renoir and love all things French, you will like this book. I was prompted to read it after watching the film based upon the book. The book is very detailed and there are many stories told by Jean Renoir about his parents and the everyday life of his family. I enjoyed reading about the many painters and other people who were good friends to Renoir throughout his life. It was interesting to read all of the descriptions of the houses they inhabited and the neighborhoods surrounding them. Jean also gives the reader insight into his father's philosophy about life. This book left me feeling that I wish I could have met this great painter. I would have given this book 5 stars, but some of the descriptions were quite wordy.

Jean Renoir's memoir of his father's life is a tender hearted hagiography more than it is a linear biography. it is a book that could only have been written by a loving son. It is intimate as one would expect from a book written by a family member and at times Jean Renoir strays off to explain some relationship or episode in language that suggested to me that he was being flooded with memories as he wrote. This gives the book in certain respects the aspect of a long and rambling recollection of the great artist that incorporates the France that he lived and worked in beautifully and results in a highly atmospheric read.Near the end Jean Renoir wrote in describing Renoir's final years in Cagne " like all stories about Renoir, it is devoid of anything sensational" . For me that captures the spirit of this book. It is as intimate a portrait of a famous artist as I am ever likely to read and for anyone who is interested in Renoir and his work it is pure joy from beginning to end. A fabulous book.

This sweet and gentle book of recollections by Auguste Renoir's son, Jean, is literate and well formed. It takes me on a journey to Renoir's world where I can smell the grass and mud, feel the sky and clothes, hear the babies and dogs and taste the food and air. I am grateful to have learned so much about this magnificent artist and his friends and family and times from this highly recommended book.

A wonderful, cinematic and lyrical account of the fascinating artist’s life and death, by his son, a great auteur of the film industry.

I was eager to read this story of Renoir's life from his son's perspective. I am a big fan of the Impressionist Painters and Renoir is without a doubt the very best. I loved learning about the type man he was.

This book is good, but when I took the test at the back of the book, and looked at the answer I started getting very confused.In the book it says phonemical awareness can be taught with the students’ eyes closed, but in the answer key it says phonological awareness.There is also a math question: (3x9)^4=The answer is (3x9)+(3x9)+(27x27)......I answered (3x9)+(3x9)+(3x9)+(3x9) which is the right answer.Make sure you check the answer key, and compare with the book. Or don’t take the exam from the book otherwise you may learn wrong information without knowing it.

I have been studying for 3 weeks now and have been finding a lot of typo errors. The format of the book is excellent but I will not rely on it completely.

Did not feel this book was very helpful and the Practice Tests they offer online are the worst. There are 3 tests and they all ask you the same questions, sometimes in the same test you are asked the same question 2 or 3 times.

Great material that is all needed when studying for this test!! It is all layed out in an outline and has 3 practice tests in the back. Don't be intimidated by its huge size, the front section is mostly outlines and some study tips and the back is full of tests so the core material is in the middle and it's a huge section but it's all excellent material.

Heymann left no stone unturned in this very detailed autobiography of the puzzling creature the world came to know as the "poor little rich girl" - Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton. Our favorite portion of the book occurs when a dinner companion candidly asks the socialite how it feels to be the world's richest woman - her answer is forthright and simply wonderful. Heymann's attention to details, names and places may have your head spinning at times...this is the kind of book that demands your full attention and is best devoured in small bites. You're gonna need a scorecard to pay attention to Hutton's husbands, lovers and ways to spend money!

This was a sad recounting of a troubled life, which is evidence that money cannot buy happiness. As heiress to the Woolworth fortune, Barbara Hutton was one of the wealthiest women in the world. She lost her mother at the age of five and didn’t ever seem to have anyone who really looked out for her. Her seven marriages ended in divorce. One of her greatest losses was the death of her only son. With the exception of Cary Grant, all her husbands apparently were only after her money, and she obliged them. In spite of her immense wealth, she looked many years older when she reached her sixties. This was no doubt due in large part to her excessive drinking, smoking and use of drugs.She did not always behave in an exemplary manner; however, she did have some wonderful qualities, not the least of which was her generosity. Not only did she give generously to her husbands and boyfriends, but also she gave to her servants and others when she saw they were in real need.I enjoyed reading this book and think most people who like biographies will as well.

I'm about halfway through the book, but I was surprised to find out that there is a lot TO this famous woman besides her indulgences in the privileges (and travails) that go with having tons of money. She was bright, imaginative and an astute observer. A big part of the book is based on journals that she kept throughout her life, and her accounts are detailed, well-written, and hugely interesting - they provide a great commentary on the culture and the times that she lived in. And she is much more forthright about the details of her intimate relationships than I ever would have expected. She was certainly no prude! The book also includes nice photos of some of the significant people in her life - some of them. As you know, there were so many!

While I skimmed a few parts that didn't interest me, I generally was entertained andinterested in Hutton's life. In some ways it was a fascinating escape into the landof the waaay too rich!

I enjoyed this book. She really was a "poor little rich girl". Always searching for someone to love her.

This book proves money can't buy happiness, especially when you don't earn it yourself. It's fascinating to see how the really wealthy lived, especially during that time!

This was a very well written book chocked full of information. Hutton was definitely a poor little rich girl and at times it was hard to see her completely throw her life away.
