There was a great deal of buzz on Twitter about this novel's reissue, articles about its cult-status, NPR mentions, it was the thing all the cool literary kids were talking about, and so, that I'd never heard of nor read it pushed all my "I wanna be popular, too" buttons and I quickly ordered a used copy.Novella rather than novel, this allegorical romantic-tragic-comic --- okay, this un-categorizable romp is a feminist --- no, a humanist --- no, a satirical --- no, a fable of --- no, a lyrical --- no, a political --- you see the problem?Ignored when released in 1982, its naming in 1986 by the British Book Marketing Council as one of the twenty greatest American novels since World War II still failed to earn Mrs. Caliban a permanent place on the list of must read classics but, luckily, it has been sustained by its inclusion in many a literary fiction MFA curriculum.Having lost two children, trapped in a marriage of resigned, passionless suburban-ennui with an adulterous, deceiving husband, Dorothy Caliban, numbed and defeated into surrender by choices made and not, is making salad one day when "... a gigantic six-foot-seven-inch frog-like creature shouldered its way into the house and stood stock-still in front of her, crouching slightly, and staring straight at her face." She's met Larry.Larry has been held captive, experimented on and tortured by government researchers who he's killed in order to escape. Dorothy sympathizes, offers him sanctuary, and soon enough, they fall into one another --- physically, emotionally, spiritually --- as she hides him, unbeknownst to her oblivious husband --- in a room off her kitchen, where Larry learns about Dorothy's world from television and radio programmes. Thus is set into motion a series of events revealing fissures, cracks, and facades in the lives of Dorothy, her husband and friends, and the world in which she lives, a world she tells Larry is "all right" now that he is in it.Is Larry real? A fantasy onto which Mrs. Caliban projects her dissatisfaction with her limited, disappointing life? Is this a modern Beauty and the Beast? Or, is this feminist social-theory writ ironic? It is, I think, all those things and more, a concupiscent conflagration of marvelous writing, imaginative use of plot tropes, humor, pathos, and technique, all of which is entertaining. Imagine an episode of The Twilight Zone as written by Elizabeth McCracken and directed by Baz Luhrman; the implausible and outrageous made believable and beautiful.

In her mid-life, Dorothy’s life is far from the best. She’s experienced the unexpected death of her young son, lost a baby, has only one real, close friend, and has a husband who both ignores and cheats on her. Hers is a sad life. But her life changes considerably the day Larry walks through her backdoor—Larry who the radio news announcer describes as a “creature” escaped from “the Jefferson Institute for Oceanographic Research” after horribly mutilating its keeper and the scientist studying the “Monsterman” after capturing it on a “South American expedition.” Larry—with eyes “seemingly much larger than the eyes of a human being, and extremely deep” standing six-foot-seven-inches tall with a head “quite like the head of a frog, but rounder,” webbed hands and feet, and a body “exactly like a man—a well-built large man—except he was a dark spotted green brown in colour and had no hair anywhere.” Larry—who is taught to speak at the Institute and declares his keepers “had mistreated him” and forced him to “participate in various forms of sexual abuse, some of which [Dorothy] hadn’t known of before.” Larry—who Dorothy hides away in a back room of the house where her husband never goes—and becomes Dorothy’s lover. Larry—who makes Dorothy happy again.Mrs. Caliban (1983; with an Introduction by Rivka Galchen in the New Directions reissue of 2017) by Rachel Ingalls is a most incredible book. The blurb on the cover from The New Yorker refers to it as “A perfect novel.” Never a huge success (none of her work has been due to its eclectic nature and, perhaps because she is a woman states David Canfield in Entertainment Weekly), Ingalls’ Mrs. Caliban is getting new attention most likely due to the tremendous film success of another amphibian-man/human female love story, Guillermo del Toro's The Shape of Water (2017). Ingall’s novella, however, has been praised by authors such as John Updike, Joyce Carol Oates, and Daniel Handler (Entertainment Weekly) since its release. As surreal as Dorothy’s acceptance of the sea-monster Larry appears to be and the sexual affair they have (which is never explicitly detailed), the novella also has in it moments of sudden (off-stage) murder, infidelity, duplicity, and violence. Inhuman weaknesses are countlessly on display. But don’t for a moment believe that Mrs. Caliban is a horror novel. Ingalls tells her story in such an off-hand, even jovial narrative voice that the distressing moments contained within the work seem as every-day as shopping for avocados. Readers will not find themselves horrified or even shocked, but truly enchanted as they step into Dorothy’s world long before Larry appears (and he doesn’t appear until nearly twenty pages into the work). As Larry gets more restless and is filled with questions about humans from watching TV and venturing out among them in disguise, as Dorothy learns more about her best friend’s personal life, as Dorothy’s husband continues his secretiveness, as more victims allegedly fall “to the bloodlust of this creature,” and Dorothy and Larry take their relationship to increasingly new heights, readers turn the pages of Mrs. Caliban in awe, wondering how things are going to turn out, with any “willing suspension of disbelief” left far behind. There is one point of ambiguity in Mrs. Caliban that is never fully addressed. At the beginning of the story Dorothy hears secret, short messages emitting from her very old radio that “looked like a 1930s Gothic cathedral… that couldn’t possibly be real.” Only she can hear them. Are they products of her vivid imagination? And could Larry, after the newscast of the “monsterman’s escape” who is never seen by anyone but Dorothy (although he comes home wounded from an attack by strangers with dire consequences), also be imaginary? Such is the magic of Ingalls’ writing that the reader will never know, and it really doesn’t matter. The climax of the novella is surprisingly intense and the conclusion heart-grabbing. Mrs. Caliban is, indeed, a “perfect novel” without a single, wasted word and readers are bound to be left wondering what other treasures by Rachel Ingalls await re-discovery.

I don't understand the good reviews and certainly not calling this a "perfect" novel. It surely had an interesting and compelling premise, but most of what happens outside of this central idea is mundane, boring and predictable. Perhaps it needs to be to help us accept the fantastical relationship at its core, but I still found it brain-numbing. On the other hand, there is not enough detail given to the development of the pivotal romance for us to believe in it or care very deeply. This is rather an ambiguous, ambivalent review ... but I guess that sums up how I feel about this novella.

I recently saw The Shape of Water and, feeling underwhelmed by the execution of its brilliant premise, figured I'd read this book that presents a very similar story.Larry is a talking sea monster who loves avocados. (Who can blame him, honestly?) After escaping from a duo of sadistic scientists who captured him, he shows up at the door of a lonely housewife named Dorothy and reinvigorates her mundane life. This being a slim novella, there's very little room for setup or explanation. In fact, the casual and matter-of-fact way that the relationship between Larry and Dorothy plays out is part of its charm. She accepts him into her life immediately, allowing him to fill the void left by her unhappy marriage and the recent death of her child. Is Larry real, or is he merely Dorothy's fantasy—the antithesis of her husband and her boring existence? This quirky and charming little novel is also a biting work of social satire and feminist fiction, existing in the gap between reality and fantasy, grief and joy, acquiescence and agency.

I absolutely love Catherine Bybee's Weekday Bride series and I'd been anxiously waiting for Rick and Judy's story ever since they both appeared in Single by Saturday. I just finished reading their story in Taken by Tuesday and it was simply amazing. I loved the flirting, sexual tension and witty dialogue whenever they were together. I enjoyed the suspenseful elements in this story and I could not stop turning the pages and reading. I became totally smitten with Rick whose sex appeal and fierce protectiveness had me swooning. Judy was an intelligent woman whom I admired and I loved that she trusted Rick without question despite circumstances. I adored Meg, Judy's best friend and she really shined in scenes with her lively personality. I hope she will get her own story in the future. And I cannot forget to mention how sexy it was to see Neil with his baby daughter which just melted my heart. This author knows how to write an engaging story with characters you fall in love with and cannot help but go along for the ride. I cannot wait for the next book in this series.

Ms. Bybee has done it again! Taken by Tuesday is an engrossing read with just the right balance of romance and suspense/action. This book is written as a stand alone but your reading experience would be greatly enhanced by reading the earlier four books (or at the very least the previous two). This is Rick and Judy’s story and it was worth the wait.We first met Rick in Fiancée by Friday. He was in the Marines with Neil and had his back when he needed him. He's such a great guy: strong, honorable, committed and the fact that he's smoking hot (with dimples even) certainly doesn't hurt. Judy we met in Single by Saturday. She's Zach and Michael’s sister and she played a big roll in getting Becky safe. She's smart, capable, and keeps a pretty cool head in a crisis. On top of that she and her best friend Meg have some mad internet research skills. On a side note I loved Meg and am now eagerly awaiting her HEA.This is the story of two people who have great chemistry but aren't sure if the should pursue it. Ok maybe Judy is the only one who is unsure, she doesn't know if her career goals are comparable with what she knows she will come to feel for Rick. A series of events makes their marriage a necessity, or at least preferable to the alternatives (sorry I'm vague I'm trying to avoid spoilers). Chaos ensues, everyone bands together and the day is saved.I have to say that I love Catherine’s writing and this series is my favorite. I love all the characters and how they connect. I love how characters are introduced and you can begin to see where their story might go but it never takes away from the stand alone quality of each book. I love getting to see past couples living their HEA and their families growing. I would recommend this series and this book specifically to any fan of the romance genre, I dare you not to get hooked!

I love this series so of course I couldn't wait for this new story in it. And even though my expectations were quite high, I wasn't disappointed :)This book has absolutely everything. The hot Marine who will do everything for his woman, hot love scenes, suspense which will make your skin crawl and of course a happy ending. Judy and Rick are quite enchanting, funny and likable characters and even though Gwen and Neil from Fiance by Friday are still my favorite couple in the series, Rick and Judy are becoming close second :)The story is amazingly good written and even though it is close to 300 pages, it is pretty much impossible to lose interest in reading. In my case it just kept me glued to my spot reading and in the case when I actually had to do something I just switched to the audio version (which btw is also amazingly good narrated). I think you won't make a mistake if you pick up this book. And yes, it is part of a series but I think it could be read even as a standalone, though the experience will be better if you read the rest of the books first :)Definitely a recommended read :)

There was no doubt I was waiting on this book...I had to know what happened between Judy and Rick after the chemistry that they had at the end of the previous book! And, I was not disappointed! While Rick tried to get his "babe" to go on a date with him, Judy grappled with whether or not she'd be losing herself by agreeing to date the man she couldn't get off of her mind. A series of events leads to Rick and Judy spending more and more time together until they finally realize it really isn't a question of whether they should be together, it's whether they could even function apart.Catherine Bybee does an amazing job of creating a plot that sucks you in as you move through the book. She also surprises you as well when something completely unexpected threatens to end Rick and Judy's new found relationship before it really gets off the ground. There is also no shortage of sparks between the main characters which only sweetens the story.I've been a fan of Catherine's for a long time and once again she has created a story that is worth everyone's time to pick up. I can't wait for her next book!

Judy has a plan. Graduate college, get a job, and become an architect. Rick has one job. To protect Judy. After she graduated college, Judy and her BFF Meg, move to L.A. where her internship is. Seeing Rick again has the potential to throw her off her game plan but the attraction is off the charts. When Judy is attacked where she works the only one she wants to keep her safe is Rick. When he is wrongly accused of her attach and put in jail, Judy suggests marriage so she won't have to testify. After he is released they resume the hunt for the attacker. When an explosion happens at her job and she isn't found, Rick must use everything he has to try and save her. But will he make it in time. And if he does, will she love him as he loves her? Can they have a real marriage outside of all the chaos of their lives together so far? I recommend this series to anyone who loves smart, sexy heroines and the strong alpha men who love them.

An interesting and useful book to have as reference; however was a little disappointed, but that is a personal thing, many would love it as a reference book. Useful to refer students to from my class; although having Sally Maxwell's book - is their first choice.

The great thing about this book is the tremendous number of illustrations from many artists with wildly different styles. If this doesn't inspire you to try scratchboard art, you probably can't be inspired. There isn't as much instruction as I wanted, but just go to YouTube and search for Scratchboard Tutorial.

Wonderful book with fantastic pictures of different techniques. Just what I needed

Seriously intelligent and great read! I learned more here than in any other material I have found.

If you have an interest in learning about scratchboard and the techniques used, this is the book for you. I highly recommend it.

Illustration as a vocation requires exceptional versatility and great drawing skill; it also requires the ability to think visually and solve narrative problems. Prof Lozner, an accomplished artist and illustrator, draws upon her classroom and studio experience to offer up a dazzling array of illustrations that teach all these skills by great example. Anyone who draws, or who has ever wished to draw, will find this book stimulates their imagination and expands their technical facility. Prof Lozner has researched decades of scratchboard illustrations; she masterfully curates styles ranging from dramatic to whimsical, from decorative to draughtsman-like.This is not a 'how to draw the pirate' book for beginners; it assumes the reader is capable of using art materials and can interpolate how the examples are done. This book is for advanced students, and the accomplished illustrator looking to excel. This reader would have wished for a short biographical sketch of each artist whose work is represented, as well as a date for each work, but this is still a 5 star book.

There aren't many books available on scratchboard but I've managed to obtain some. I got this book through Amazon's out-of-print service and am very glad I did.The first few chapters give a history as well as overview of the materials used. She shows various scratch tools available as well as various surfaces. Instructions for inking your own all-black surface on white scratchboard is also given. The next few chapters give examples of the various types of lines and dots that can be achieved with the scratch tools. Some of these examples combine pen & ink with various techniques. The Getting Aquainted chapter, for example, give instructions for creating various half-tone effects, stipple effects, hatching and cross-hatching and combining these with pen & ink. There are instructions for creating an "unplanned drawing" (which the author defines as sketching directly onto the scratchboard surface freehand) and a "planned drawing" (which is sketching first on paper and then transfering the traced drawing to the scratchboard). There is instruction on how to correct mistakes, using various mechanical drawing aids such as French Curves, triangles and compass. There are chapters on creating a woodcut or a linoleum cut and metal or wood engraving effects. She deals with effective use of light and shadow and values. There is even one small chapter on non-traditional scratchboard and more experimental surfaces or effects. The final chapter deals with using color with your scratchboard art.Throughout the entire book each page is crammed with diverse and stunning examples of scratchboard art. Much of the enjoyment I derived from this book was simply from looking at all the great art featured. The diversity of styles - from non-representational to realistic was a feast for the eyes.I would definitely recommend this book to anyone considering trying out scratchboard. Scratchboard fans won't be disappointed.
