Read this book only if you are prepared to realize that much of what you thought you knew about baseball is nonsense. This book is an amazing eye-opener about a then radical new way of managing a pro baseball team that allowed the dirt-poor Oakland A's to win as many games as the fat-cat NY Yankees. Using detailed statistical analysis created by baseball fans like Bill James who wanted to know how to make better teams in their fantasy baseball leagues, Oakland GM Billy Beane drafted or traded for players other teams considered sub-standard or worn-out and Oakland became a post-season threat despite having the second lowest payroll in the major leagues. Although the baseball establishment reacted with horror and contempt to having its time-honored methods of choosing players challenged, the approach used in Moneyball has been widely adopted by many teams including the Boston Red Sox who won the World Series shortly after doing so. Since reading this book I laugh every time I hear an announcer use the phrase, "productive out", knowing that over the long haul it's teams that don't trade outs for bases that win more games. The Moneyball approach remains controversial with many fans and baseball industry insiders--it's more fun to watch someone bunt a runner to second than it is to watch that hitter draw a walk--but the numbers show that over time the walks are more valuable to a team. Regardless of how much you agree with Bill James and Billy Beane, this is a terrific book that will make you really think about how the game of baseball works.

Terrific read. For some reason, I didn't read it until 2016. It has a different perspective now after 13 years. We have already seen the affects of Moneyball and Sabermetrics on baseball. Theo Epstein seems to be the greatest beneficiary of the theory, the man who used sabermetrics and had a budget to spend. Two World Series victories, one for the Red Sox and another for the Cubs after many decades of losing. The Cubs didn't win the World Series in 2016; Theo Epstein was the winner. I liked reading Moneyball to follow the theories and careers of those who were the big players in the book. The afterward by Lewis gives a lot of insight into the reaction of baseball's old boy network, the old guard who rejected change.

Very interesting book that flies by. It is so easy to read that you can almost pardon's Michael Lewis' penchant for perpetuating the hyperbole of others and contributing exaggeration of his own. You can easily see how the added flair and drama makes the book more interesting for a mass audience. You can also excuse the fact that the book doesn't actually point out the answer to the original question. Why were the Oakland A's able to win so many games on a small budget? It turns out that was a little bit of skill but mostly luck. They got lucky with their pre-moneyball pitchers Zito, Mulder and Hudson.Despite the fact that Lewis doesn't highlight this anti-climactic conclusion on his own, the book still has enough information for the reader to get there. It is ironic that this parallels the reason Bill James' departed from Baseball Abstract and that is mentioned in the book. There is too much focus on the details that don't matter. The high level narrative and explanation are more important. Budget matters. You can get a slight advantage by exploiting inefficiencies but this takes a long time to prove out due to limited data points the out-sized impact luck has. There are lots of little nuggets of information like that hiding in this book that make it worth reading.

I decided to read this book after I got a nagging feeling that I am the only statistician in the US who hasn't read it. This review is aimed at those who are interested in quantitative performance evaluation or quantitative modeling in general.First, I'd like to thank Lewis for a book that is worth reading even for someone who has never learned the rules of the game and never will. Even if I had had a glimmer of interest in baseball per se before I read the book, it would have been extinguished for good anyway (read on to learn why).According to Lewis, for about a hundred years American baseball existed as a peculiar social club composed of GMs, scouts, baseball writers and commentators, and players who would often become one of the former. The first reason why The Club was special was that it was rarely run as a business. Consider Walter Haas, a former owner of Oakland Athletics. Haas was a great-grandnephew of Levi Strauss and coincidentally served as CEO of Levi Strauss & Co for almost 20 years. He was not shy of giving it back to the American society or at least to the most indispensable part of it, professional baseball players. As a result, in 1991 Oakland A's enjoyed the highest payroll in baseball while losing money for the owner. Unfortunately, that commendable manifestation of social responsibility was halted in 1995 when the new owners switched to a pro-business stance and slashed the payroll drastically. The new goal for the GM became to keep the team in the major league, while minimizing the ratio of payroll to the number of wins. The quest for how to run the most cost-effective team resulted in a number of fascinating discoveries. First, consider the process of drafting young players from high schools and colleges. The old scouts were used to some glaringly subjective player selection criteria, such as how cool the player's body looks ("selling jeans") or how concordant his facial features are with a great future in baseball ("The Good Face"). The "internal compass of an old baseball guy", directed them to look at the player and "imagine what he might become". They believed that they could judge and predict the player's performance simply by watching him. To be fair, the old school scouting worked fine but only assuming that the team's pockets were very deep. Indeed, that was often the case thanks to Walter Haas and other individuals who possessed similar amounts of wealth and social responsibility.Of course, different stats (foot speed, batting average, etc) were also considered, but none of the old guard had the desire, ability or means to assess how predictable such metrics are given the current information about the player. For instance, do young power hitters tend to develop precision over time or not? Are the stats of a high school player informative enough or does it make sense to ignore them and focus on the college players who have a longer history? Are there metrics that confuse skill and luck and contain no useful information even about the past performance, let alone the future?Further, suppose the future values of a measurable characteristic (e.g. foot speed, fastball velocity) can be predicted well, and we are fairly certain that luck and skill are not mixed up. So far so good, but exactly how much does that particular skill contribute to the ultimate objective, winning a game at the lowest cost? Say, if the future foot speed of the player is guaranteed to be as good as it has been, how much the team should be willing to pay for the player? If the answer is known, the GM can then perform some arbitrage by selling players whose characteristics are overpriced and buying those whose characteristics are underpriced. It may appear strange that those questions were not raised and addressed until after Billy Beane became the GM of Oakland Athletics in 1997. Apart from the philanthropic attitude of the team owners, there were other reasons why. Before the late 1970s, quantitative analysis of baseball data was both hard for the lack of computers and impractical because the players' salaries were not that high. Most importantly, the eventual adoption of quantitative performance evaluation methods revealed that the baseball data are extremely noisy. To extract some useful insights, one has to generalize from a large body of stats that no living scout or other baseball insider can keep in his head. Likewise, to see whether a given quantitative approach does (not) work, it's not enough to follow the career of a single player or observe the outcome of a single game. That nourished the perception that quantitative metrics are more or less useless and recoursing to one's "internal compass" works better when it's time to draft players and then decide how (not) to use them during the game. An example of such attitude is the scouts' belief that "if you see it once, it's there", which is a ringing endorsement of making a decision based on the sample size of one. Given how much the outcome of anything that happens on the field depends on luck, that's a kiss of death for good scouting, or at least for a cost-effective version of it.Undoubtedly, baseball teams vary in skill, but, according to the book, the contribution of skill to the outcome of an average game is about four times less than the contribution of luck. In particular, the number of games in playoffs is so small that luck doesn't cancel out: in a series of five games, the worst team in the major league has a 15% chance to beat the best team. Because a team that loses in the playoffs cannot get the coveted World Series title it creates another psychological incentive for having little faith in the quantitative approach. To me it also means that if all of the noise were to disappear (and that's what "sabermetrics" is trying to achieve), the game would become far less fun to watch and talk about. There is not much thrill in observing how a slightly biased coin is flipped. Isn't that another reason why both the insiders and fans preferred to stick to the old ways instead of embracing the "performance scouting" and other insights offered by sabermetrics? If that's the case then The Club turns out to be far more rational and efficient than Lewis portrayed.Next, I'd like to explore the most important point made by Lewis: bad as they may have been, the baseball statistics were probably far more accurate than anything used to measure the performance of people in many other lines of work, so ...? What immediately comes to my mind are the "scouting" (hiring) practices of Microsoft and Google that included the so-called brainteaser interviews that were administered for 10 to 20 years (see Are You Smart Enough to Work at Google? and How Would You Move Mount Fuji?). To me it has always been clear that being good at brainteasers does not predict one's future job performance unless the job amounts to solving brainteasers. Both companies banned the practice in the end, even though some copycats are still lurking around. The point, however, is why it lasted for as long as it did. Apparently, the engineers at Microsoft and Google are no fools. They figured out that the brainteasers fail at achieving their purported objective many years ago. Why continue to use them, then? Moneyball provides a plausible explanation. Companies are not only about doing business but sometimes about being a certain social club. The club entry requirements can be as arbitrary as anything. If they appear, to put it mildly, irrational, that is to be expected every now and then. Therefore, the real question is not "Are you smart enough to work at Google?" but "Are you a good fit for the Google social club?". Regardless of what the answer is, it has nothing to do with one's intelligence or the absence thereof. Now back to baseball. If you have some quantitative background I could highly recommend "Stein's Paradox in Statistics", a paper published by Prof. Efron in 1977 (incidentally, that was the year Bill James published his first Baseball Abstract). The rather ancient article is quite in line with what I learned from Moneyball: the amount of noise in the baseball stats is substantial and the players are a lot more similar to each other than it appears to the public and even the insiders. It looks like my background in Statistics, combined with what I learned from the book, made it impossible to enjoy the game the way millions of fans do. Nevertheless, I managed to derive a lot of value from Moneyball and I wish you the same.

This book is part of the "Cards of Love" series but is a standalone.Deidre and Jeremy are broken shells of themselves. Tragedy has marred their very existence. Without any anchors left in their lives, they both decide to retreat into themselves and essentially become "hermits".This is a book of finding the joy in life again. This is a story of finding not only love but a way back into the world and into themselves. Both Jeremy and Deidre lost sight of who they were as people because of extenuating circumstances. Together, they find everything that was missing from their lonely existence.I loved the chemistry between Jeremy and Deidre, it is electric and magnetic. I loved their banter. You immediately are taken in to this story, it is completely captivating. You root for both of these characters with a fierceness as though you personally know them. The story moved and flowed effortlessly, with a clear beginning, middle and end.If you are a fan of Ms. Brent, this is one story to not be missed. I hope we get to revisit these characters in the future!

Cora has done it again. Cards of Love is an amazing book, with all the push and pull I‘ve come to love in Cora’s stories!

I truly enjoyed this quick read of 2 souls that have suffered the pain of loss and in turn lost themselves. And together they find themselves and learn to work past their pain to move on and learn how to love again, love themselves, and Love one another.

Wasn't expecting this book so what a treat! Loved the way the scenery was so descriptive I could picture it easily. The story was steamy hot and mushy at the same time. Great read!

Loved and enjoyed this story. Human tragedy brings people together and this is how the story began. Ms. Brent is definitely did a excellent job in creating this love story.

Love can conquer all. Such a good story line about healing from the past and moving forward in love and laughter.

I really enjoyed this one. This Author never fails to draw me in with her words and makes me feel for her characters with every story she writes.Jeremy the one time superstar retreats to a small town in the mountains where no-one bothers him, he likes the solitude of being alone, a Hermit with no connection to his former life.Deirdre decides she wants to escape from her life too, leaving her family behind and severing all ties.I loved how Deirdre and Jeremy met, the way he spoke to her. It made me chuckle at how just out of practice he was.You can't help but feel for both of them, they're two broken people that carry a lot of pain around. They aren't looking for each other but circumstances bond them together.Sometimes the best things happen when you least expect them.A fantastic standalone story from the Cards of Love collection.

Tragedy, Love lost, Heartbreak and love all rolled into one great read!Jeremy was at the topOf his game with Boxing, he was a champion with his whole life and career ahead of him until everything changed in one life altering moment.Jeremy decides to turn his back on life as he knows it, walk away and forget. He moves to the desert, a small desolate town where no one bothers him, basically he checked out of life.Dee moves to the same desert town for research purposes and when she gets herself lost and ends up on Jeremy’s doorstep she awakens something in Jeremy he though was gone forever. This was another amazing read by Cora that kept me fully engaged. I loved to see Dee and Jeremy’s feelings develop from friends to love. They both overcame tragedy by discovering each other.

This masters degree may be the death of me.

This book is exactly what I expected It came in great shape and with all of the pages. A great resource for an EHS professional.

Excellent text loaded with excellent references that can be applied in the classroom and corporate office.

Will be a go-to reference book in my professional library.

I consider that this book is more expensive than its real price and the condition of this book is not good.

class is done

Way too expensive, as all college textbooks are, but it does have a lot of good information. Excellent future resource for referencing legal issues.

I went looking for this book after watching the Masterpiece Theater series that is based on it, "Selfridge". I found it enjoyable to read, thoroughly researched, and generally well written. I thought the author struck the right biographical balance between Selfridge himself and his times and the context around him. It contrasts with the series which, understandably as it is TV, has many more plots with little connection to Selfridge himself and a lot more emphasis on romance and sex than you will find in here. I was more interested in the way he changed retail culture and that was also the focus of this book, so I liked it a lot. The author has done a great deal of research and I felt confident I was reading a fairly accurate account. It read pretty briskly, as well, although toward the end, once the store is established, the narrative loses some steam and many paragraphs consist mainly of lists of things that happened in a particular year relevant to the store. Still, it held my interest consistently and was overall a well-done biography that I am glad I read.

I first watched the PBS series Mr. Selfridge starring Jeremy Piven. Loved it. So, when this was book offered on Kindle I grabbed it. It was well worth buying as it is wonderfully written and extremely well researched. A lot of the story lines on the PBS series were fictionalized but not to the point of distraction but reading this put it into perspective. Our modern shopping stores are the result of Harry Gordon Selfridge's imaginative and acute business sense. We shoppers owe him a debt of gratitude!

I really didn't think that I would like the book after watching the series. I was wrong. The book is a wonderful read and a compelling story of a very unusual man. Selfridge changed so much about the shopping "experience"; many of the things we take for granted today were innovations in his time. The story about how the perfume counter was moved to the front of the store is a great example. Selfridge had it moved close to the door to counter the street smells - remember, horses were still pulling carriages and the streets were a mess of mud and manure. Enter any department store now, and, the perfume is still the first thing you run into.Hopefully I won't be spoiling the book for anyone if I make reference to the end of Selfridges life by saying how very sad. Seems like the company used him up and booted him out.All in all, I recommend this if you are interested in those little pieces of history that you never hear about in school but still make a big difference in our lives today.

Harry Gordon Selfridge had already made his mark in American retailing at Marshall Fields. He wanted to go it alone or at least as a partner. Maybe America was too small for Harry. He had ginormous dreams an he acted on them! He was a kid and Oxford Street, London was his playground. He promised to change shopping forever, and he did.Woodhead did an excellent job of portraying early -20th century life in America and in Britain. The main difference was shopping. In America, merchandise was on display. No one pressured customers to buy. In London, gloomy floorwalkers patrolled the shops hoping to evict the "riff-raff. Selfridge changed that; he made shopping a respectable past time for the upper class woman.Alas, Harry had his vices: gambling and women. Both were expensive and cost him dearly. He lost control of the empire he built and he lost his legacy. Gordon, Jr. shared his father's love of expensive hobbies, but without the means to support them. His daughters were not close. In many ways the story of Selfridges, the store and Selfridge, the man is a thrilling and exciting journey. It called to mind the days of shopping at Marshall Fields in the 1950s. What a grand place! I am sure if I had gone to London, Selfridges would have been grander still.

I wanted to read this book for a couple of years before breaking down and purchasing. I loved the series (the only thing I've ever seen Jeremy Piven in that I could stand, and he's superb in it), and wanted to know more about Selfridge. This is more of the real story as opposed to what was portrayed. Very interesting and ultimately very sad.

I read this book having noticed that it is referred to in the "Mister Selfridge" TV series. It did provide a lot more background about a remarkable business man who was instrumental in revolutionising experience of shopping. It is a detailed book, giving an indication of fashions at the point in time. Also giving a historic perspective and the names of some of the famous people who knew Harry Gordon Selfridge or who shopped at Selfridges. The reader can see where the TV series deviates from the facts. It is a story of a larger than life character- his rise, the pinnacles of his career and his demise.

I've watched the PBS show and bought the DVD set of "Mr. Selfridge" but I wanted to know more about the real life story of this famous man. The book is so much more interesting than the show because real life is much more complicated than anything that a movie producer or screen writer can concoct. I highly recommend it to everyone and especially marketing people.

This book is a truly fascinating read! I never knew what went on in creating the first real department store. I was brought up in the Boston area and shopped in Boston's old department stores namely Jordan Marsh and the ever-famous Filene's Basement. This book is reminiscent of Filene's Basement, where you could get the best bargains in town! My mother remembers Gilchrist's, Raymond's, for hats, and the Marble Spa where fashionable ladies sat and ate delicate sandwiches, sipped tea or coffee, and smoked. It was an era that will be forever engrained in my mind. This book brings it all back, and tells the story of how these famous department stores came about. It is an excellent read - and the television series is the best since the original Upstairs Downstairs series. If you like fashion, shopping, and history of the Edwardian period, this book is for you. It is an easy, fascinating read. I highly recommend it.

I love the love that Devin and Ashlon had for each other. The loving, the trusting and each other’s backs. I got a bit nervous when her ex kind of stepped back into the picture. At first I was feeling some type of way because I felt like he was gonna try and get her money once he found out about her being on the Forbes list and all. I was screaming at the book saying Ashlon you’re way too smart to fall for that and when they started FaceTiming and she was all giggly and what not I was saying Ashlon......NOOOOO.........and when Devin caught her I was wondering how he was gonna handle it. He didn’t do the best but hey that’s life. OMG......Black Barbee and OG Terrance. I was too outdone when he let her talk him into doing drugs. I’ll tell you, some men will do just about anything to be with a woman. I was really disappointed and screaming at him as well. NOOOOOO.....OG..........NOOOOOOO.....and then he hit it. I couldn’t believe the way she set him up but such is life. I wanted to hurt that lil girl. LolI was expecting to hear more of what happened to him once he went back to jail and also to see if he and Banny would connect. That gambling monkey is a BEAST. Poor Devin fell for it. I was pleased that he re-connected with his Aunt and Uncle. People will get it together for someone that they really love and he did just that. Ashlon was more important than drugs and gambling. I was so proud of him, but when his Uncle woke him from his sleep screaming, I felt his pain. OMG....I felt his pain, I was actually in tears reading that part. After his run, to return to his families trailer and to find Ashlon there was priceless. I really loved this book.David I was so glad to read that you were doing better, please keep up the great work and the writing. I normally leave a very short review on any book but after reading about how they help you get through some thing called life, I decided to write a long one. I’m so proud of you. Getting ready to get some more of your books.

Just had to say that Author David Weaver out did himself again. I havevto say not only did the first book touched my heart but the second book touched my heart even more. You are a out standing writer and a special person inside and out. The book was a real page turner and if you havent read part 1 or 2 please do it is worth the money andvyou wont be sorry. Please continue writing and God Bless You.

It was a big stretch between me reading part 1 and this second installment. Having said that it came back to me in bits and pieces. the only reason I didn't give it a 5star rating is because it had a slower start before it had me wanting more. . The writing was good and it had a great storyline. It was tragic what happened to Black Barbie. Devin's father seemed to start off good but his thinking process was still that street mentality. I like how it ended proving that through Christ all things are possible. I thought it was a good read and would decompress more from this author.

Once again, it was a great read! So many gems in this book. It really illustrates how you cannot play with God. Don’t come to him to change something for you, but you don’t plan on changing your behavior. I’m glad that the author has found his happy place and I can’t wait to get to mind! Thanks again for writing another awesome book!

You did it again, You dropped so many jewels in this book. I cried like a baby because it’s so real....I felt everything from start to finish. We all battle wit different demons and sometimes you feel so defeated cause I’m at that point in my life but then I get ahold to a gem like this and I’m ready for war!Thank You for blessing us again, Blessings to you!

I never write reviews on anything but I had to come and write one on this book. I loved both books. It was a true eye opener and allowed me to take a long hard look at myself. I love that the author took his struggles and but it into a book format in order to share with the world. That is God he allowed you to use your talent and struggles to reach out to others that may be struggling. I just want to say thank you this book has given me the push I needed to get back down on my knees and open my heart and life back up to GOD, I am truly grateful and humbled that I found this book even when I wasn't searching.

This was so good and feel right in sync with the first part. This book had a lot of good Life lessons. I enjoy reading your craft because you keep it 100 and you aren't afraid to be an open book yourself. May the Lord continue to bless you and your craft as you continue to live Life to the fullest.

I got so much from reading this book. From book 1 to book 2 there were a lot of changes bad and good and how there are so many men who think like Mac ques dad just sad. Mental health and addiction can creep up on you before you even know what happened. This was truly an eye opener thanks David Weaver
