a very good book about all the inner aspects of the cd format and cd players, a bit too technnical and scientific, complex subject, but is a good book..i dont know what else to say,, lots of graphips explaning the digital audio system , not for everyone,, buy it if you really like this subject, the casual reader must be stay away from this stuff!!..long live the cd format!.. the best comercial physical audio format to date!!

A bit out of date but that's to be expected given the rate of change in the DAC/ADC world.

Although it isn't easy to understand a lot of the technology that this book explains, I think it does a good job explaining the science and technology that go into CD audio. I am not an engineer or an expert, but I have enjoyed getting my head around at least some of the aspects of how CD's and CD players work.

A new book about language by John McWhorter is always a treat. He has a knack for explaining things about language in ways that are clear, crisp, witty and interesting. Words on the Move takes aim at the idea that there is a 'correct' form of English, where words like "like" aren't used as fillers, where "LOL" doesn't happen, and where there are "correct' meanings (or pronunciations) of words at any given time. McWhorter is no "anything goes" relativist, but this book is devoted to arguing that language is ALWAYS in flux - both changing over time and place - and to expect it to "sit still" is asking language to behave in ways it just can't.Each chapter is devoted to exploring different ways that language changes. First, we talk about those little known pragmatic functions of language where a lot of change happens; words like "like" or "you know," are words that are less meant to convey an idea and more to add pragmatic and expressive color to sentences. Language needs those expressive words (or...emojis?) and words like that are not extraneous.Words also change their pronunciations, and this often has to do with very gradual changes in how people hear (and thus speak) certain words. The word "like" used to be pronounced "leek" and one can understand how the "hard e" could gradually change into a "soft e" which becomes a "hard i." (And have you ever noticed how the nursery rhyme Jack and Jill rhymes "daughter" with "after"? There's a reason; the spelling didn't change but the pronunciation did.)Words also change by combining and sometimes, after combining, dropping one of the syllables entirely. Again, the word "like" (pronounced "leek") used to be attached to adjectives like "slow" ("slow-leek" meaning "slow like"), until at some point, people heard it as "slowly" And more recently, "cellular phone" becomes "cell phone" which gets shortened further by dropping the word "phone" and just saying "cell."There are many more examples like this, each quite fascinating. But the moral of McWhorter's language story is that words, meanings, grammars, and pronunciations always change. Language is a sort of living thing that we collectively create and recreate. And if you think that your version of language is the "correct" one and that "that's not what ___ is supposed to mean," there is an excellent chance that you are using words and language in a way that the same would have been said about you by purists of the 1850's. The only reason we think the way we speak is the correct way is because that's the way we learned it.

Another terrific, approachable book by McWhorter looking at how English has evolved and continues to change. Every few pages, I found myself wanting to tell anyone nearby about a fact I’d just learned.“Did you know that the adverbial -ly comes from like?”“Those little words we use to smooth the cracks in conversation? They’re mostly there to acknowledge the feelings of the person who just spoke.”“What’s happening with ‘literally’ already happened to ‘really.’”Rather than blurting out these ideas, a better choice would be to recommend they read the book. (And if they like it, they should also listen to his podcast on Slate.)

John McWhorter is great at explaining concepts in an interesting and easy to understand way. He's also got a ton of personality that makes the book really fun!

This is a thoughtful book and perfect for someone who loves knowing more about language. It was eye opening for me, because I always thought that language was set in stone. The author has a terrific sense of humor, is a great writer, and has an ability to explain things in a way made this book hard for me to put down.

In this book the student or practitioner of statistics and probability will find discussions of the fundamental properties of copulas and some of their primary applications. The applications include the study of dependence and measures of association, and the construction of families of bivariate distributions. With 116 examples, 54 figures, and 167 exercises, this book is suitable as a text or for self-study. The only prerequisite is an upper level undergraduate course in probability and mathematical statistics, although some familiarity with nonparametric statistics would be useful. Knowledge of measure-theoretic probability is not required. The revised second edition includes new sections on extreme value copulas, tail dependence, and quasi-copulas. Roger B. Nelsen is Professor of Mathematics at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. This is very high quality and well written. In that sense, I should probably give it 4 or 5 stars. So I apologize for that. My complaint is that it doesn't give enough practical understanding and examples. It just dives right in to the thick and heavy notation and proofs! In other words, a little merciful watering down (especially for the first few key concepts) couldn't have hurt.I do not recommend it for a professional who is learning how to model data correlation at work. This book is too harsh for self study.I do recommend it for an academic setting. An enthusiastic professor could help teach the concepts, and then assign problems for homework. This would even be appropriate at the undergrad level for a higher level course.

I just got this book, so I can't comment on the contents yet. However, I feel quite ripped off, because this is the previous edition. The hardcover, which is only $20 more is a new second edition, while the paperback is from 1999.

This may be good as a mathematical treatise, but as a practitioner, I did not find it at all helpful.

This is the second edition of THE book on copulas; there are others, eg Joe, and Drouet and Kotz, but this is the best reference work I know of on this topic. The second edition does not frankly have a huge amount of new content; the most obvious is the very useful set of scatterplots used to illustrate the appearance of copulas. This I think shows up some properties like symmetry better than equations could do. If I had purchased the first edition, I probably wouldn't feel it had been worth upgrading---it depends on how deeply you are `into' this topic. On the other hand it's reassuring that there hasn't been a lot of recent work we didn't know about!I thoroughly recommend this book, and, if I meet the author, I shall reckon that he owes me a drink.
