TROUBLE WITH PARSNIPS is about a much braver and more inventive person, the kind of person who looks up and sees everyone. The kind I want to learn to be.As a grown-up, I went to a Toastmasters International club that helps people learn how to speak up in the right way at the right time. It's like Girl or Boy Scouts because you can earn "badges" for learning how to stand up in front of others. :)At the time, I was a Girl Scout Leader, so our Troop tried everything out at our meetings. Nobody looked at the floor. After a while, the girls ran the whole meeting. It was cool.So I started writing about a princess who didn't think she could ever give a speech.

This is a terrifically inventive tale about a princess (the youngest of 15 children) who needs a name, fast--and the clock is ticking... The stakes are high, not only for her but for the whole kingdom, and I found myself reading faster and faster as I neared the end. I also fell in love with the entire Cochem Kingdom, a wonderfully quirky place where the characters are obsessed with library books (yay!), good quality parsnip fries, and excellent, rollicking speeches. What a fun, satisfying read!

The Trouble With Parsnips is the story of a spunky princess who is a go-getter and inventor, but who will remain nameless until her christening, which is a decade overdue. But to achieve this, she will have to face her fears of speaking in public. The story follows her adventures as she saves the kingdom from the Blackfly Queen and faces her own fears. Excellent tool to tutor/teach my son. I speak as someone who loved math in school, excelled in it, and use it now in my career. My son, on the other hand, sees math as a chore. He dislikes his teacher, and neither of us like the textbook (Springboard) he uses in school. Both of us much prefer this book. It is well laid out, and a good value. It has the right number of problems so that you can evaluate whether you have learned the material. If you need more problems, you can look for them elsewhere. This keeps the book to a manageable length, not overwhelming. Very happy with my purchase.

Love, love, love this book.As a private tutor, I had been searching for a good supplemental resource book for Geometry, and I stumbled upon this one. I had a student who was struggling with Geometry, lost, overwhelmed and intimidated by the subject, and math phobic. We worked together for several weeks, and made some good progress, but she was still struggling. Then this book arrived. At first she panicked a little, because this book didn't look like her class text book, with its handwritten notes and easy, less formal language. But then she started working with it in between our tutoring sessions, and she "got" it. (As a teacher, those are the moments you live for). Her stress level and math anxiety went WAY down, she became confident and even comfortable with the subject. After her midterms I waited to hear from her to schedule our next session. And waited. . .and waited. . . I finally spoke with her father, who happily reported how well she was doing, and how enthusiastic she was about this book. A few months later, I got the call every tutor loves - an excited (former) student reporting that they got an A in the class, confidence and enthusiasm practically bursting from her. Ah well, thanks to this book, I lost a $50 per hour tutoring job. . . but for the very best of reasons:)This book can initially be a little intimidating, because its big, thick, crammed with information, and might not look exactly like the math texts you've been used to. But once you get into it, you will fall in love with it. Its well-organized by topic, and its beyond thorough in its discussion of each item. the margins are filled with hand-written notes and diagrams showing key ideas, shortcuts, common mistakes to avoid, and explanations. It can be used either as a primary text to progress through from beginning to end, or as a secondary, supplemental resource to be used just as a fill in to learn more about specific topics. Its presentation of proofs is especially well done.I wish this series was available in every subject I teach. . .

My son's school switched to "common core geometry" this year. The other students are lost and the teacher doesn't seem to know how to teach this latest theory (at parents night we were told that this new "new math" will make our children MUCH smarter but she couldn't even explain what common core geometry is or how it's different from the regular geometry). But..... MY son is doing great, thanks to Tutor in a Book and he even LIKES the class. The person who wrote this book knows geometry and knows how to teach it. As for common core geometry it looks like it's the same material but done in a different order. My son read the last chapter of the tutor book first and then understood what was going on in the class. I recommend this book, it's very good.

Purchased this book for my son who is taking honors geometry. He was having difficulty understanding the teaching method of the instructor. After some tutoring with his teacher and using this book, he better understands what she was trying to convey and is doing much better. I recommend it.

I was skeptical since I've tried other "math help" books before. This one is it! This book has helped my teenage son gain confidence in geometry AND actually understand and retain the information. His grade is increasing and his confidence is building. He no longer despises geometry. The geometry battles between us are over and this book helps me to explain concepts to him when needed. I definitely would purchase again.

I purchased this book as a refresher for me so that I could teach my students effectively and know what I was doing. This is one of the best tutoring books around. It walks you through each problems step by step and provides you with many opportunities to practice each skill. I can honestly say that I learned more from this book than I did in school. I use it with my students to give them extra support as well.

About the Authors Zhi-Pei Liang is a faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Dr. Liang has contributed to the theory and applications of image reconstruction, constrained imaging, and image analysis. He received the Sylvia Sorkin Greenfield Best Paper Award of the Medical Physics Journal in 1990 and the National Science Foundation Career Award in 1995. Dr. Liang was named a Beckman Fellow of the UIUC Center for Advanced Study in 1997 and a Henry Magnuski Scholar for Outstanding Young Faculty Member in the ECE Department in 1999. Paul C. Lauterbur is a Center-for-Advanced-Study professor of Medical Information Sciences, Chemistry, and Molecular and Integrative Physiology and professor in the Center for Biophysics and Computational Biology, the Bioengineering Program, and the Beckman Institute all at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Before conceiving of and demonstrating magnetic resonance imaging in 1971 1972, Dr. Lauterbur used nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to study molecular structures. Among his numerous awards are the 1987 National Medal of Science, 1990 Bower Award and Prize for Achievement in Science, and 1994 Kyoto Prize for Advanced Technology. First let me describe the book as to its production quality. This is one of the typical IEEE productions, namely the paper quality is on par with your local newspaper, the binding cracks upon opening, and they have the annoying "enhancements" of shading examples in gray which often makes them unreadable. I have had this problem with most IEEE books and for the price they charge they should at least provide some quality in production.Now to the content. The authors provide a comprehensive and detailed analysis of MRI and signal processing.My concerns relate to the following issues:1. MRI can be quite difficult. The reader must first understand the physics, then the signaling to effect a response signal, then the modulation of the response so as to select voxels to be detected, and then the Fourier analysis which produces the image. The reader, if approaching this for the first time, even a well educated signal processing engineer, should have a pathway to follow. The authors fail in this element. All the information is there, yet one must construct the framework.2. Certain equations are critical. Others take one along the path. For example, Eq 3.150 and 3.154 are essential. They are what makes MRI. However the authors just slide from one to the other and then from Eq 4.1-4.5 use these without regard to a reasonable transition. They introduce a function M, and one suspects it may be M(w) or M(z) or M(t). Having taught material like this at MIT and written books on the subject of signal processing, one must be careful to delineate key transitions and important equations.3. The authors have lots of equations but one gets lost in which ones count and how one should follow the "bread crumbs" to use a metaphor. The classic book by Van Trees on Detection and Estimation was the "gold standard" for taking the reader and/or student along the path and delineating key points and conclusions. In this text the authors just seem to jumble every equation together with equal value.4. The heart of MRI is the signals used to do phase and frequency transitions across the elements to be processed. The discussion in this book regarding that is, I feel, quite weak. One should be given a good intuitive feeling and then apply the mathematics. As I have often told my students, first explain what is happening and then apply the mathematics to "pretty it up". Here the authors have almost bludgeoned the reader with mathematics.The book contains great pearls, yet the quality of the printing, not the authors' fault, and the jumbling of every equation possible, leaves the reader wondering. A better press, publisher, and a rewrite with focus and builds of ideas would make this a great and much needed contribution to the field. It is clear that the authors know their material, it just needs fine tuning.

it is a new book, and it is very useful so actually everything is fine except that I waited for about 1 month.

The book is claimed to be new, but it looks like a copy instead. The figures printing is really poor, the paper quality is completely different from the original one that my friends have.

The selection of the chapters and the overall coverage of this book are excellent. It provides an outstanding and detailed description of MR physics and of how MR signals are generated and processed. However, not being an engineer or a physicist but a MD interested in MRI, I had some problems with the mathematical background required to understand the formulas used in this book. I feel that the book would be greatly improved if a more detailed explanation to the mathematics were given. At this point, I would recommend this book to graduate students or Ph.D.'s in physics, in biomedical or in electrical engineering, who want to understand in detail the principles of MR signal generation and processing. Because of the somewhat complicated mathematics, the book might be somewhat less destined, but still of interest, to radiologists and MRI physicians who, like me, want to enhance their understanding of MR physics and signal processing.

This is an excellent textbook. Easy to follow if you are comfortable with Electromagnetics already. Lot's of math and examples inside. Make sure u get this book first, if you study MRI.

A very well-written book. It includes step-by-step analysis which leads beginners to gradually understand the concepts and physics. It is very good for textbook as well as for self learning.

I didnt like the text format. i bought the book "university physics 2" instead which is much more helpful. quality was listed as very good, but was barely acceptable

I didn't like this book. The way the book explains the theory is not friendly and the example problems are poor. They do not fully aid the reader when trying to solve the exercise problems.

Volume one was great, I haven't ever had more attention from the ladies. Volume two = old news. All the ladies are flocking to Jack... "Ooo JACK!" with his "Organic Chemistry!". I must learn this... "Organic Chemistry" ...and once again become a ladies man.

Not much to say it is a normal college physics book with lots of math and equations. Make sure you look at example problems in the chapter because they will help a lot when doing the chapter review problems.

These books are complete garbage. They're required for my school but I'd suggest grabbing this and finding another textbook/source to learn from. The book just oozes with the ejaculate of the editor's affair with a thesaurus. The concepts are poorly presented, often being mixed in with other concepts to add to the confusion. The examples are inconsistent and are more convoluted than the Metal Gear Solid series' story. If you manage to force yourself through the chapter and make it to the end of chapter exercises, good luck figuring out what they're talking about. The questions are all paragraphs long and have so much information crammed in, with such poor use of English, that chances are you won't even know where to start. Then if you manage to actually get through one, there's a fairly good chance the answer in the back of the book is wrong.Again, if your school requires this book, I'm sorry and know your pain and I suggest finding alternative books/sources to get through the first three semesters of physics. If you're teaching yourself, stay away from these books.

Firstly, Stuart Gibbs is a fantastic author, and without a doubt, this was an excellent book. Stuart Gibbs wanted this book to shine; however, I felt like the plot was overrated and too rushed. There are two mysteries combined in one, and they are both rushed in to be introduced. Then in the middle of the book, one case is solved and is left hanging. It felt rushed fitting a problem rising action and scenario in one book. The plot was interesting, but because there was "limited" space in the book, it didn't seem as put together as well. Stuart would have done fine with only the lion mystery. It was weird that just in one moment he says he thinks he knows who did it to get the plot moving.Great read overall and I can't wait for the next book. Stuart is working on the Spy School series, which isn't as good (my opinion). I will continue to read and re-read the FunJungle books. I was so sad that there was an end! The book is terrific, and I highly recommend it to any reader. It's a page grabber, and you can't put it down towards the end. Great Job Stuart!

I WANTED so badly to like this book. I really, really did. I have read all the other FunJungle books and I loved them. This book felt convoluted and sort of reaching for a plot line. Most of it does not have much to do with FunJungle either, it is about a mountain lion outside of the park being hunted by idiots.I just did not think the book was as well thought out and put together as the other FunJungle books. I will definitely continue the series but I hope the next one is better than this.

Lion Down is definitely a really great book. I cannot stop reading! I would definitely recommend Lion Down. It is a pretty good book for experienced readers.

As much as i've wanted to love this book, it seemed disconnected from the rest of the funjungle series. I love Stuart Gibbs' books, but this book has rarely anything to do with the books before it or funjungle. Theres also a whole part of the book that relates with real-world political issues. Out of context I could see many readers enjoying this book, but compared to the rest of the series, this book is controversial, disconnected and overall lacking the traits that make me love Stuart Gibbs' books. Knowing that your wife just died, its hard to write a happy book when in such a state. I am truly sorry for your loss. I wish you the best of luck. I understand your sadness, and I believe you're not at fault for the problems in this book. On the bright side of things, this book has a pretty compelling plot, with ups & downs & breakthroughs and all sorts of stuff that make a mystery book great. I wish you the best of luck, and I absolutely adore your books.

if you want adventure read this!It is out of all my stuart gibbs books my favoriteand i dont lie it has a great stiry line perfect ending and everything else people love im not gonna spoil it but this is my rating :]

This was great. There were moments where I burst into laughter (I usually never laugh at anything) The main problem was that some parts lagged on a bit. And the stuff with Summer doesn't really get resolved. However, the mystery was interesting, the action was creative, and the overall message was important. 9.2/10

i have been waiting for this book to come out and it was just as good as i was expecting. i recomend buying this book for people who enjoyed the previous funjungle books
