The Illustrated Herbiary: Guidance and Rituals from 36 Bewitching Botanicals, by Maia Toll

Review

“In this delightful debut, Toll relies on her imagination to spin a fun botanical mythology. O’Hara’s bright, bold illustrations—which introduce each entry and are also included as a divination deck—will appeal to readers with strong lines and a sense of glowing from their centers, a boldness that carries through to the more representational sketches of plants that follow. It will appeal to those looking for fun new ways of considering plants.” — Publishers Weekly “This book is enchanting, wise, engaging, and entertaining! Filled with magic, myth, and tantalizing bits of wisdom, The Illustrated Herbiary may just be one of the most delightful and original herbals written, and definitely one of the most beautifully and lavishly illustrated. Don’t expect to learn a lot of scientific facts about herbs in this whimsical ‘herbiary,’ but be prepared to find your sense of wonder kindled and your imagination sparked as you connect in a most profound and playful relationship with the green world around you.” — Rosemary Gladstar, herbal educator, activist, and best-selling author “Opens us to the plant world and ancient teachings from those who live close to the earth.” — Oriah Mountain Dreamer, author of The Invitation “Part oracle, part kitchen-conversation with a beloved friend, this book is a treasure that will open your awareness to the plant world like never before.” — Asia Suler, founder One Willow Apothecaries “Who knew that plants had such a powerful language and could speak to the core of our soul? The rituals are deliciously simple and the accompanying oracle cards are a delight.” — Brigit Esselmont, author, Everyday Tarot & founder of Biddy Tarot “Every page blooms with deep-rooted plant wisdom.”— Rosalee de la Forêt, author, Alchemy of Herbs: Transform Everyday Ingredients into Foods and Remedies that Heal “It takes a special ear and heart and mind to translate nature's wisdom, and Maia Toll does it with staggering beauty. The messages of healing and renewal here, for the earth and human, will leave you smiling and spellbound.” — Linda Sivertsen, author, Generation Green, & host of the Beautiful Writers Podcast “Rife with wit and wisdom about the more ethereal aspects of 36 botanicals, The Illustrated Herbiary invites readers to enter into an ever-deeper relationship with the plant allies we share this Earth with.” — Ashley English, author of the “Homemade Living” Series “Beautifully written, vibrantly illustrated and a seamless blend of physical observations and spiritual sagacity. This herbal is not primarily about healing your body; it is about how plants can help you heal your life.” — Robin Rose Bennett, herbalist and author of The Gift of Healing Herbs and Healing Magic- A Green Witch Guidebook to Conscious Living “This is an important book full of kindness, old ways made new and practical magic. Maia is a voice for the plants she so lovingly shares with us, and she makes their healing energy and wisdom accessible to all.” — Nicole Cody, award winning blogger and metaphysical mentor “Maia's book is beautiful and informative and sassy.  It is a delicious introduction for the new herbalist and a strong addition to any herbal, gardening or esoteric library.  You should own this book.”  — H. Byron Ballard, folklorist, author Earth Works

I've been slowly working my way through The Illustrated Herbiary since receiving it on release day - I made sure to pre-order this one. This isn't a reference book - there are plenty of (wonderful) herbals and materia medicas out there, and this is not one of them. No, this is a feast for the senses. This book gets you out of your head and dares you to get into your body, to experience the colors of the illustrations, feel the magic of the plants. This is a feeling book, not a thinking book. Kate O'Hara's illustrations take it over the top - out of the head, into the heart. The cover has a light shimmer in spots - as though the wisdom shared inside is buzzing, excited to come out. The binding is sturdy, but loose all the same, allowing the book to lay flat, like a well-used family cookbook.I am very neurotic about my books - no cracked spines in my house. Thankfully, this was not a concern with The Illustrated Herbiary - the book falls open and invites you to dive in and get comfortable. No worries about "hurting" it - the Herbiary feels like a book your best friend would loan you - cherished and loved, yes, but ready to be put to work.Allow the Herbiary to fall open to a random page, then consider what you find. Did you land on Apple? Elderberry? Take in the illustration - look at the symbolism, consider how you feel, how it resonates with you.If you already know about the plants, excellent - allow your knowledge to intertwine with the gorgeous representation of the plant's spirit. Does Maia's interpretation incorporate smoothly with what you already knew?If you don't know the plants, this is an amazing introduction to them. Look upon the symbolism with fresh eyes, allow yourself to feel into the suggested rituals and reflections. You may be inspired to learn more about our plant allies, and what a beautiful point from which to start.Buy the hard copy. The Kindle version might be a nice addition later, but you will cherish the hard copy of the book - plus you'll have the oracle cards!I first learned of Maia Toll around a year ago, and have been enjoying her blog and classes ever since. She has shared a gift with the publication The Illustrated Herbiary. Thank you, Maia.

Can I just first off mention what we all find already obvious? How pretty the art is everywhere in this book! It’s got all the different herbs and it’s meanings with rituals for each and reflections for how it would apply to ourselves that we can use as exercises. And the pocket of oracle cards at the end!!! Ugh, amazing. It’s like a two for one deal.I love this book, thank you Maia!

I won't repeat what other reviewers are already covering. If you are looking to step it up with your intuitive hits that you gather from the plant kingdom, this book is for you. It gets your imagination revving, your eyes excited with the feast of images. Each plant is covered in about 4 pages: a beautiful image to meditate and connect, a page of wondrous word-smithery, and then there are two additional pages with "ritual" and "reflection". There are a LOT of plants covered in this book, and it's guaranteed that you can find a dozen right outside your door (as Susun Weed would say). This is a book for connecting with the essence, the spirit, of the plants. This is not a book to look up your ailment and pair it with an herbal remedy. In that regard, I think this is a great book for beginners who are just starting out, but the book will require some work out of you. You can dig deeply, or you can nibble at bits here and there in the book. It would also serve well for bibliomancy. The oracle cards are fantastic. They are flimsy, but I intend to put a new backing on them so they'll last forever. Also note that you should really bend the perforated folds all the way to carefully separate the cards. Otherwise you risk ripping them. I plan to get a lot of use out of these cards. I intend to do a lot of journaling and create my own "oracle deck" book based on what I get from the cards.P.S. As a side-note, you don't have to be a feminist to appreciate this offering. I am not one, and a lot of times I have a hard time finding materials in this genre that aren't saturated with the ideology. Just a friendly note to individuals. :)

The Illustrated Herbiary not only has the most stunning imagery, but the author, Maia Toll, paints vivid visions of each plant's magical gifts and personality. Like having tea with a friend, this book seems to gift you just what you need in the moment whether it's a gentle voice or a little courage. AND you get cards?!? The Illustrated Herbiary is easily turning into one of my favorite go-to's for a little daily guidance (you can read just a page at a time if you want!) and a moment of quiet pause to remember... there's magic in the world... I just have to listen, I just have to open my senses. Thank you for this treasure! This book is even more beautiful in hand.

J. R. R. Tolkien took us on a journey to middle earth, Toll and O'Hara are taking us back-this time in whimsical technicolor and a gorgeous adventure of plants and self discovery! The illustrations will catch your breathe as your eyes and heart jump for joy at the details and beauty! The words of plant knowledge, rituals, and reflections will inspire you on your journey to the richness plants and Mother Earth gives us in abundance each season.A magical way to stop in a world of busyness, electronics, and concrete and connect back to Mother Nature, plants, nature, and Self!
