Two of the best books I've ever read. Phil Yancey is one of my top 2-3 fave authors of all time. He is not afraid to ask the challenging questions we all have, and is honest with well-thought out theology based on good Biblical understanding. He is not afraid to discuss his own challenges of faith, and honestly tries to come up with good answers to hard questions. Honesty and authenticity are refreshing. In Jesus I Never Knew, he discusses the realities of the horrible moral times of Jesus birth in the Roman empire, and seriously challenges the "sanitized" stereotype of Jesus that our denominations have often projected about Jesus' life. Jesus was emotional (just as God the Father is), and deals with the frustrations of real life in a fallen world. He empathizes with those who are suffering, and though He is all-powerful He chooses to suffer with us as we learn to walk in faith, making the choices that are often good or bad in life. Phil exposes the paradox of free will that God has gifted us with... that gift that can either bless or damage ourselves and others around us. It is into this fallen world of conflicting choices that Jesus comes to live with us, suffer with us, and show us the way of God. Messy. Brilliant. A loving God Who cares enough to do the hard work to teach us how to live rightly.His notes on some of the tragedies of life continue with the next book. "Disappointment" addresses the paradox of why an all-powerful God would not use that power to just "fix it", but allow us to live with the often harsh realities of living in a world that is seemingly antithetical to the way God planned things from the beginning. He is honest. We don't have all the answers. We LEARN how to live in faith. We LEARN what it means to suffer, whether for consequences of our own choices, or for the choices of others, or (hardest) when we suffer and there does not seem to be a reason or anyone to blame (except God it seems). But we also LEARN the reality of the fantastic HOPE we can have beyond this life by examining Jesus' own life among us. Phil is articulate in his thoughts and pointed in his exposition of scripture and theological truths of God's Word where God meets real life. These two books were influential in calling me out of of my career and into ministry at a later age. They work in conjunction with prayer and Bible study to build faith in the midst of a broken world... towards a God Who loves us so deeply we cannot comprehend... Who gave His life for us in love.If you question God, suffering, and the unfair things that have happened to you in life, these books are the TOP TWO books I would have you read as you search for answers. The third one is "Imagine Heaven" by John Burke. Please... if your faith is weak or you question God, read these three books... PLEASE, give it a chance, you have NOTHING TO LOSE! All of this goes way beyond the physical world of science and into the world of the soul, where "science" as we know it is entirely different. Mr. Yancey has written a thought provoking book, trying to recapture a fresh perspective and rescue the long time disciple from the curse of familiarity and presupposition. However he often lets poetic license outstrip strict adherence to biblical authority. Reductio logic would take some of his suppositions into heretical territory. He also makes a crack concerning Jesus's failure to directly address homosexuality that is reminiscent of the "red letter" heresy. That is, the notion that only the direct words of Christ are to be taken from the bible as authoritative. He doesn't quite go there but the inference is certainly present. I would recommend the book, while cautioning the reader to carefully test every doctrine in light of scripture. Mr. Yancey offers several insights worth considering. I do agree with Mr. Yancey that Christians should carefully reconsider being too invested in political aims for furthering the not-of-this-world kingdom. Present election squabbles tend to distract and sidetrack, more than compliment, the Christian mission. God is our rock and refuge, come what may.
Yancey provides a remarkable analysis of the life and teachings of Jesus. His explanation of the temptation in the desert and its relationship to freewill is insightful and instructive as we struggle to reconcile an imperfect world with a loving Creator. His treatment of the Beatitudes and the Sermon on the Mount similarly resonated with direct application to our daily lives and understanding. That we cannot be perfect, try as we might, but we don't have to be, that is the gift, in return for being as loving as humanly possible. A life changing book.
Philip Yancey starts by describing the versions of Jesus he knew when he was growing up, and the rest of the book describing the versions (well, aspects) of Jesus that he found in the Bible during years of study.It’s a fascinating book, and it’s great for anyone who wants to know Jesus better--especially since it points the reader to the Bible. There’s no off-the-wall theology here, just good gospel truth presented in a well-written, down-to-earth, interesting way.The book is full of tidbits that reveal how much research and hard work Mr. Yancey put into the book--details about Jesus from history (and from modern movies about him), how different people or cultures view Jesus, quotes about Jesus, and much, much more. I worked through the book a little every day for a few weeks, and I’m glad I did.In the end, of course, the important thing is knowing Jesus, no matter how you see him. Then you can spend eternity getting to know him better.
A very concise, and insightful, look at the character of Jesus, based primarily on the four Gospels (as opposed to the epistles, etc). Like Jesus himself, the book takes aim at subsequent church dogma and tradition, showing where it is, and often is not, on track with how he is shown to be in the gospels themselves. Very interesting book, a fast, and fascinating, read. I came a way much better for it, I think. Highly recommend this.
If you struggle with believing in God's grace towards you, this book will help greatly.
If you're going to read one book about Jesus, make it the Bible. If you're going to read two, this is my suggestion for the second. A serious attempt to dig into the person of Jesus, both divine and historical, working from the Biblical stories up rather than from our current theology down, Yancey's book tackles everything from Jesus' Jewish roots to the Beatitudes ("lucky are the unlucky"), citing Christian fiction, Christian scholars, and secular historians, but always bringing it back to the Biblical foundation of Christianity. Well worth it for Christians wanting to deepen their relationship and understanding of Jesus, and I suspect helpful for outsiders looking for an interpretation whose only agenda is, "Who is this man, really?"
