A simplistic book packed with needed information. The author answered questions that were rolling around in my head (ie local tourist attractions, types and locations of restaurants, weather, money exchange,etc.) and questions I didn’t formulate (how to deal with “time share hawks”, navigating the airport, and why drinking the water can result in Montezuma’s Revenge). I appreciate being able to use the book as a quick reference as it is separated into logical topics and provides local phone numbers.

Gives only very general info with no advice on local transportation and no maps. There is so little helpful info that I cannot recommend this to anyone. I downloaded the Kindle version. Will be deleting it.

Information in the book was decent. But the formatting of the kindle edition was terrible. You could not go directly to the ToC, nor from it directly to any section. Their were no visible page numbers or any other way to easily go to a particular part. Had to basically thumb through page after page trying to find the desired section.

A very good guide to the best places to see in Puerto Vallarta.

Pretty good info but a little more insight on places to go or deals to seek would b nice to have

Very helpful already and we are just in the beginning phases of the college selection process. I can see that it will be something more than a one time read but will be used as a valuble resource to give insider-like tips to guide you through the entire college application process.

We have two daughters nearing college age and this book provided useful insight into the admissions process. Jerry has spent his career in higher education, was President at Morningside College and the University of Indianapolis, and his experience gives him a refreshing take on the college selection process. Because Jerry really doesn't come from the world of elite college institutions (like Harvard or Princeton) his perspective is the kind that is useful to most of us who have children that have the vita to attend a good state college or private university, but don't aspire to 1600 on the SAT.Some of Jerry's myths in the book are fairly conventional, of course completing college is more important than where you attend. But it is in Israel's discussion of the business model used by most colleges, and this model's impact on the price a family is likely to pay for college that the book shines.Essentially the argument boils down to the following:1) The quoted price of tuition is typically higher than the actual cost of education. This pricing model is designed to give the college leverage to charge high income families what the market will bear while giving them space to negotiate price with other prospects. The price of college is almost always a sticker shock for parents, and many parents avoid considering private colleges at all because the posted price is so intimidated. Israel does a nice job of explaining why this is a mistake.2) Colleges are prepared to negotiate price with most of their prospects. This negotiation is generally conducted by offering scholarships (which are really just discounts on price) and loans.3) Colleges are more likely to work with students who treat the college as if it is their first choice and with students who best complete the profile of the student population they are trying to recruit.4) Colleges won't negotiate if they aren't asked. If you are truly interested in the school and explain your circumstances well, colleges will do what they can (within reason) to close the deal.Thus purchasing college, in some respects, isn't much different than buying a car, and Jerry does a nice job of debunking the myth that somehow it is.Jerry's insights on how to test a college are also well worth reading. After reading the book, I'm convinced that we'll make at least one unannounced visit to any college that our daughters are seriously considering. If you are just starting the college selection process, this book is a great resource to frame the search and get started on the right foot.

Extremely helpful and even-handed description of the reasons that Union and Confederate soldiers gave in letters home and the like for for fighting the Civil War. It is worth noting that though secessionist politicians talked much about defending slavery as the cause for the southern revolt, that was not true of the actual soldiers, though some (chiefly the wealthier ones) used euphemisms for slavery like "southern institutions." The main issue seems to have been simply southern independence on one side annd preservation of the union on the other (with a gradual shift on the Union side to ending slavery as.the war progressed.)

Even though the material sources were relatively small in comparison with the large number of people who fought in the Civil War, the author was very good at analyzing this group and mentioned this limitation in his writings. If you take this book in conjunction with other books, you can draw good insight into thoughts and reasons why people went to war, and how their thoughts changed as the conflict matured. The soldiers became more human and their reasons for fighting and believing in their respective causes was more understood to the reader, even though you could not condone some of these reasons. Today we are more judgmental and quick to condemn others due to our political correctness, but this book helps to look past our own shortsightedness. I would highly recommend this book to all serious students of the Civil War.

I have read over 50 books about America's Civil War. But this was the first one that dwelt on the soldiers themselves. I love the real spelling and wording from their letter's home. And I learned a lot about the war as I always do. I learned that the Civil War was likely the one war where the soliders knew why they were fighting. I also learned in more detail about how the Confederates struggled with the slaves in the war fighting against them and that U.S. Grant said if the Confederates will not trade black prisoners that no prisoners would be traded. The well written book offers so much more that many books from the perspective of the fighting men, those loosing their lives.

This is a great book. I had to read it for my Military History course as a book review. McPhearson uses first hand accounts from letters and diaries from Northern and Southern soldier. The quotes throughout the book can be quite chilling when trying to explain peoples reason for wanting to join, initial fighting, and their continuing fight. Even if you are not studying history or need this for an academic purpose it is still a great and interesting read.

I enjoy author McPherson's style and the way he presents his material; he's very readable and one can grasp what he's saying quite readily. I finished this study today and have not digested it completely. McPherson relies of the wealth of information comprised of the letters and diaries of combat soldiers, many of them privates, to explain his conclusions about why men joined the Union and Confederate armies. He discusses motivations for joining, which were quite similar for men on both sides (except for the southron's view that his 'country' was invaded):: liberty, preservation of freedom, and patriotism. McPherson goes on to examine soldiers' writings to discover why they stayed in service when times were bleak, such as Union soldiers after Fredericksburg and Second Bull Run and Confederates after the triple whammy of Gettysburg, Vicksburg, and Chattanooga. Moreover, the author looks at combat motivation, or what caused men to do what they did during battle. I especially liked the last chapter in which McPherson examined Confederate soldiers' views on arming slaves to fight for the south and what cause Union soldiers who's three year enlistments were up in 1864 to reenlist voluntarily.

Mr. McPherson gives the reader the view of the thoughts and life of soldiers and officers from the North and South in the Civil War through their own letters. As a reader I wanted to know these men's names, what they looked like, and more about their families. Usually this was not possible, but the letters are presented as the men wrote them in their words. The men are articulate; yet denied their physical description, I could imagine them through their own unique spelling and way of "speaking."The author skillfully integrates the letters through many areas of concerns for any fighting man -- the reasons for volunteering and continuing to fight, letters from home, exhultation in battle when winning and despondency in loss, secession and emancipation, the place of "the Negro" in "the cause" and in battle, courage and its meaning, the challenges of each day, and more. These concerns are chronologically presented, and viewed from both the men of the North and South. The men's thoughts show they were men of courage (though many questioned if they would be) and conviction, loyalty and commitment, family men who evaluated their own reasons for being and fighting, recognizing what they were missing at home and why they were there--many understanding that this moment in time was also the future.I was not prepared for the book to end. Perhaps the author will entertain a sequel. I want to know about the "letter writers'" families and the men's thoughts at the end of the war. What was their experience upon return home? And what happened to families when they didn't return. I want to know how the letters ended in the National Archives or how and why they were saved and found their way to a museum. In other words, Mr. McPherson captured my desire to know more -- a true sign of a good and most worthwhile read.

This is a great book! It is written and illustrated like a beautiful story of African Americans contributions to the comic industry over a very long period of time into the present day. It is the start of great work realizing that some people will say why didn't you include this person or that person. That's the difficulty of doing this kind of book but the most exciting thing about that, is that it makes for even greater anticipation of more books which will include even more great artist in this field and once that book is done someone will say again what about this person and again the cycle and the need will be met with even more future books until people start to realize the enormous contributions that are being made everyday by great African American artist, Women of color and brown people a whole. We now have a voice that will continue to be shared with and by, everyone over a continuous space of time! So celebrate this book and cheer on future books that capture more artist because remember, there has never been a book quite like this before!

I wasn't expecting this book to explain the process of awakening, however I am glad it did! I love this little book. There are very clear stories and examples of how enlightenment is a life long, ongoing process instead of a peak experience. I have referenced this text many times. In real fairness, the title isn't really what the book is about. The book is poetic and gentle. It is kind and helpful. This book discusses living deeper in the world.

I bought this book in September of 2011, on the advice of aacquaintance. Being a Psychology major with a BS degree, and, aadditional Substance Abuse Specialization degree, and, some postgraduate course completion from Imperial College of Science @theUniversity of London, UK. I thought, with over one hundred and thirtybooks on the study of human behavior, in my personal study, I've created from a bedroom, to a study room, I thought I had read everything, on one's spiritual journey, toward life balance, including attendance to over one dozen one to 5 day seminars, from "book writers" on the national & international speaking circuit, including, many audio-cassette tapes on those pop psychology, and, "transformation" orientedseminars. The book "After the Ectasy, the Laundry" by Jack Kornfield, I found most enlightening, that, "I have not read everything, I had falsely told myself". The book is easy to read, and interpret, I believe, to consumers of all faiths, religions, including agnostics, andathesists. I highly recommend this book, to anyone, on a spiritual journey for wholeness, and to gain additional peace of mind, who may have a goal of becoming "Self-Actualized" in Abraham Maslow's Hierachy of Needs, or even the beginner, who is on a spiritual journey, (my choice of words) who, may have become dis-enchanted, attending seminars,"when the guru leaves town, all too often, the charisma, and, insight, fade away" (at least that has been my experience form 1983 until this very year, 2011). I give Jack Kornfield, a solid Grade A, as with his Ph.D in Clinical Psychology, again, is written, in very simple language, for even, the beginner, who seeks some answers, that life is a journey, not necessarily a destination.Everyone worldwide, can gain some very useful insight about "Enlightment does exist, and bring transformation, but, they don't last" from pagexiii of my version, of the Bantam trade paperback edition, published in October of 1991. I am also most grateful, to www.amazon.com who offered this book, at a savings to me, from a independant bookstore, classified as "Very Good" my interpretation, was it was flawless, and "brand spanking new", & received the book with supersonic speed, frombuymeimcheap. This was a gift for my dad's 60th birthday and he really loved it. He couldn't stop flipping through it after opening it and is still reading it and talking about it weeks later. He's the biggest car guy around and it's so hard to find him something car related that he doesn't already have. He was really stumped on how I was able to find such a cool book that he had never seen before at any local bookstores. Five stars.

It's a really good book it's got 1935 Peugeot 402's to 1943 Willy's IN Jeeps to 1945 VW Beetlesand Oldsmobile 4-4-2's as well! But I didn't can't find a Corvette. It's also got.VW Kombi's, Baja Bugs, Caddilac's and so on. I love it and it has two prints of a 1949 Pontiac Chieftain Convertible and a 1962 Shelby Cobra. So if you like old cars and want a book to learn about them this may be the perfect book for you!

Gave this book to an avid classic car lover for her birthday and she absolutely LOVED it. The illustrations are so bright and beautiful and the book itself is the perfect coffee table book for the car lover in your life.

I loved this book as it was comprehensive and included high quality pictures. It exactly met my desire for an attractive coffee-table book that I can pick up anytime and quietly enjoy the pictures of some of the best automobiles in the world.
