Writing with the head of a scholar and the heart of a poet, Red Pine creates a rare gem to behold, in your hands, in your heart, for years to come. There is so much material in it, along with so much beauty in the style and language, I find myself going over the same passages again and again just to savor them. Made for slow reading, but then speed is just not the right metric here. Thank you, Bill Porter, for sharing your wisdom with us. Bowing in gratitude.

Thank you Red Pine for such clarity.I also love your book, “The Zen Teaching of Bodidharma” which I discovered in 1990 and is my main book for extended travel.Your clear mind and extensive research has nourished my practice deeply!

I have 5 other copies of this sutra and this is my favorite. Pine reads Sanscrit and Chinese, which most other writers cannot. I believe his translation is the best. His commentaries are outstanding. Continued study of this book increases my understanding of this most important sutra. First understanding, then knowledge, and finally wisdom.

Red Pine's translation of The Heart Sutra is an excellent guide for studying the Sutra. He provides solid background material and then moves into the Sutra, line by line, quoting from various authors over the centuries, and adding a few of his own comments. He also references other authors for further study. His translation provides a fresh view of this challenging Sutra, while still being able to be chanted smoothly.

I finally understand the heart sutra, after unaccountably loving it for many years. Excellent translation and commentary.

Given the prominence and role of the Heart Sutra in contemporary Buddhism, it would have been easy to ignore its origins. In Japan, for instance, it is probably the most chanted sutra, and many lay people have it memorized. Red Pine dutifully uses his introduction to review the existing scholarship to locate where the sutra may have been composed and why, even speculating on possible purposes (e.g., a summary of other Buddhist teachings or texts). He provides historical context to other sutras and points out that different translations in Chinese - let alone English - further confuse what a true Heart Sutra may look like. Finally, Red Pine notes that other Buddhists and scholars have been commenting on it for centuries (there are 80 extant Chinese commentaries that predate modern times).Red Pine does his commentary line by line. In so doing, he gives us an excellent overview of Buddhism, its core concepts, and plenty of nuggets for meditation. For instance, in analyzing line 11 of his translation, he reminds us of the often paradoxical nature of Buddhist teaching. "If ... all dharmas are empty of self-existence, impermanence no longer applies, as they neither come into being nor do they cease to be." That is, if there is no beginning or end, then there can be no impermanence. This is reminiscent of Joshu's dog: just like Buddha nature is not something that can be had, to say it is not there denies the reality. The logical mind freezes. Kensho. Great stuff. My only fault is the translation itself. I prefer the one used by the Rochester Zen Center. Incomplete though it may be, it is great for chanting.

The Heart Sutra is a gift, a gem. I don't know how to better express my opinion.Red Pine (Bill Porter) has crafted a translation and analysis of the Prajnaparamita Sutra (Heart Sutra) that surely will stand the test of time. It is readable, incisive, and edifying without being lofty. For those unfamiliar with Buddhism, the Heart Sutra is the kernel of the philosophy, and requires careful consideration to penetrate the many layers of intent. This book gives all readers background material needed to begin understanding the Sutra. The Prajnaparamita Sutra concentrates the focus on emptiness. This is basic to Zen sitting, or zazen ("sitting concentration"). The short form of the Sutra itself is quite short - 35 lines of English text, not quite two pages in this trade-format book - stating the basics without elaboration. The great value of The Heart Sutra is the breadth and depth of material added by Red Pine on a line-by-line basis.Nota bene: This book is NOT a substitute for instruction, but serves to deepen the readers' understanding of the Sutra. Readers who want to learn ABOUT Zen and sitting should read The Art of Just Sitting, Second Edition: Essential Writings on the Zen Practice of Shikantaza. Those who want to learn HOW to sit should find a teacher who is an accredited sensei.

Red Pine draws on his impeccable grounding in original Sanskrit, Pali and Chinese texts, his understanding of history, and a long-time practitioner’s experience to gift us with this multi-layered study of this central Mahayana Buddhist sutra

Overall a great read where 500 pages flew by. A fascinating look into how Luckey greatly contributed to the VR world and was abruptly tossed from it because of politics. A highly recommended read whether you’re into VR or not.

I'm a large fan of what Blake did with immortalizing the story behind Sega and Nintendo, as I was a student in marketing, it was a fascinating story that shined a light on a great deal of how the industry had worked during the wild west.Of course, gaming has become more and more corporate and calculated as time has gone on, but there's a new frontier that people are trail-blazing and that is Virtual Reality. This book is a coherent piece of nonfiction, that tells the stories of those that are currently revolutionizing what entertainment and escapism means.I was instantly hooked by Blake's first couple chapters and his writing chops are at full-force yet again with this book. Definitely check it out whenever you can as soon as possible.

I've been following VR for a while now and this book gives a great insight into its early development. Very interesting story with plenty of drama and interesting characters. The author gives a very balanced and nuanced view of some controversial topics.

This is a great read, providing the reader with an excellent history, told from the people who made it, of how Oculus went from a project being tinkered on in a trailer in Orange County, CA to a Multi-Billion dollar acquisition by Facebook. That story alone is worth the cost of admission, but the book then goes into great detail on how Oculus changed under its parent company and the hysteria surrounding Palmer Lucky's political beliefs. The reader is taken on a journey, with no judgment from the author and instead an earnest view of the facts as presented by the sources interviewed.

Not really well written. Like maybe it was his first book and possibly rushed. Funky dialog between characters. Needs help from better authors for future works.

Incredible story, very well-written and engaging. Does an excellent job of opening your mind to beliefs you may strongly hold. They'll make a movie of this, mark my word.

I received this book yesterday and I couldn't put it down. Blake's writing is imaginative yet and you feel like a true fly on a wall for this transformative journey. I felt the jubilation, pain, anguish, joy of the main character Palmer. Highly recommended!!!! 10/10

What REALLY happened with Facebook, a 22 year old billionaire and the most important technology for the next 15 years? This book finally gets to the bottom of it all. It's a must-read for anyone interested in gripping corporate intrigue and world-changing tech stories. Harris' signature "Narrative History" style from "Console Wars" is on full display here. The pages fly by as he drops one bombshell after another.Another great read from today's most interesting nonfiction author!!

"Crash Course is a compelling moment-by-moment recounting of a startling modern air disaster. If you are looking for a great read, you will enjoy Crash Course. I could not put it down when I read it--either time!"--Tom Cordell, FAA Designated Pilot Examiner, Retired United Airlines Captain"The public rarely gets to glimpse the personal ordeal and legal trajectory of a high-stakes case. This book is so interesting, and beautifully written. I couldn't put it down. It is broader in its scope than just the famous 1978 accident in which a United Airlines plane had to crash-land in a residential neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. Whipple's story is about the wide-ranging effects of the crash -- in legal precedent, airline safety and maintenance procedures, and revolutionary safety protocols that are now standard practice in other areas like medicine. I have learned a lot -- about the airline industry, airplanes (especially the DC-8), what goes on in the cockpit, how lawsuits play out (and how effectively corporations evade and fight them) The book is clear, concise, and detailed but not burdened with abstruse technological discussions. Its style is gripping and dramatic, but not gratuitously so -- it is lucid, honest, compassionate, and very readable.

Hats off to Julie Whipple for an expertly-researched and compellingly-written account of this landmark event in the evolution of commercial aviation safety. That said, the potential buyer should know that the lion's share of this book is taken up by the minutia of the subsequent lawsuit filed on behalf of a young survivor, plus the protracted trial and appeals that followed. You'll need an appetite for the intricacies of tort law, aircraft maintenance, airworthiness directives, trial procedures, depositions, jury selection/instructions, and the like to fully appreciate the author's efforts. What you'll find less of is a exhaustive retelling of the events of the night of December 28, 1978 and its immediate aftermath. It's definitely there and rendered in a gripping fashion but it's a relatively small fraction of the book compared to the epic legal gyrations that followed. The account of the accident itself as well as the emotional events of the 20th anniversary of the tragedy were the best parts of the book for me but they seemed like a pretty small percentage of the whole tale.On a side note, the Kindle edition needs work: There are distracting text-formatting problems throughout and, worst of all, individual chapters are not accessible via the Kindle menus, which means there's no easy way to jump forward and back. Bwomp.

The 40th anniversary of the crash of United Flight 173 is highlighted by journalist Julie Whipple's account in "Crash Course." The story behind the story has, we read, laid dormant for all this time. Because Whipple's father was the attorney for the survivors in the huge suit with United, Whipple had "insider" access to information we otherwise would never know. That's the story. The writing is outstanding and the book is a beautiful production. Without giving anything away, I'll just say that it's a hair-raising tale sped along by the presence of clear victims and villains, who, together, wage one hell of a fight. Portlanders in particular will find the book to be a valuable addition to their own history--much of it a big surprise.

Meticulously researched, a fascinating bit of Portland, Oregon history. I had heard only a little about it before, this puts it right in perspective. Great read.

On a frigid night four days after Christmas 1978, United Airlines Flight 173 descended like a 350,000-pound ghost into a Portland, Oregon suburban neighborhood. It was miles short of the airport, out of fuel and out of options, with 181 passengers and eight crew members aboard. How this could have happened is the subject of a gripping and informative book, "Crash Course," by journalist Julie Whipple. How did a highly experienced airline captain, assisted not only by a qualified co-pilot but also a flight engineer, manage to crash a perfectly flyable passenger plane with perfectly good engines in perfectly good weather within sight of an airport? On the surface, the explanation seems simple: the captain got so preoccupied with a possible landing-gear problem that he forgot a no-doubt problem - that his four-engine DC-8 was running out of fuel and headed in the wrong direction. If that's all there were to the book, it might be interesting but not necessarily compelling or important. Fortunately, Julie Whipple has done more than relate a bizarre disaster story. "Crash Course" is a thoroughgoing brief on the accident's complex causes, which remain relevant today. Using the extensive exhibits and transcripts of an unusual court trial, she argues that the Flight 173 crash actually happened long before the plane ever left the ground. United's maintenance and management practices and how air crews of all airlines were trained, or not trained, before the 173 fiasco, get a lucid examination. Last word: Many writers wouldn't have had enough faith in their readers to risk so much use of technical detail to carry a story. But Whipple is a serious and gifted journalist and chose not to underestimate her audience. She was right, and we're all better for it.- James Long

I'm not sure what other glowing remarks I can add to those who have already given this book five stars. (Is there a way to give it more stars?) All I can add is that the book is jaw-dropping brilliant, and . . . it needs to be read! Sure, Julie Whipple has lots of awards for her journalism; sure, this might be her first "book," but dang! Heads up, everybody! Keep an eye out for that name, "Julie Whipple" on future book lists!

From a horrific tragedy came ground-breaking new protocols for cockpit crews (Crew Resource Management) and new protocols for the maintenance crews and these changes have saved countless lives. Grab a copy of this well-written book which takes the reader back to the event and the subsequent litigation. As an attorney who worked as a litigator, I found Whipple's detailed account of the endless litigation to be spot-on! Hurry and grab a copy of this riveting book.

Sailing to the Far Horizon: The Restless Journey and Tragic Sinking of a Tall Ship, by Pamela Sisman Bitterman

From Booklist

In 1978, Bitterman found an ad in Co-Evolution Quarterly seeking crew members for the Sophia, a tall-ship sailing cooperative planning to circumnavigate the globe. You paid your share and you sailed. If you didn't know how, those more experienced taught you. It was an irresistible call in a freewheeling era that suited not only her sense of adventure but also her insatiable desire to learn new things. The ship was primitive, the weather sometimes foul, and crew members came and went, but Bitterman took to sailing and the unorthodox life as if she were born to it. It was a grand, three-year ride, but as the subtitle tells us, the Sophia sank, putting an end to the venture with crushing finality. Drawing primarily on the logs and letters she sent home, the author tells this compelling 25-year-old story as if it happened yesterday. And the reader can't help but mourn the loss of the ship and the crew's improvised lifestyle, as well as feel the joy, danger, and discovery that the author experienced and never forgot. “[Bitterman] tells this compelling 25-year-old story as if it happened yesterday. And the reader can't help but mourn the loss of the ship and the crew's improvised lifestyle, as well as feel the joy, danger, and discovery that the author experienced and never forgot.”—Booklist“When Pam Bitterman talks of her experiences on the adventurous but ill-fated Sofia in her late twenties, you can hear that this is a story she feels she can’t keep to herself. Lucky for us, she hasn’t because the result is a book in a class by itself. . . . Bitterman came away with not only a plethora of fascinating tales of world exploration and personal dynamics, but also the wisdom of one who has truly grown through adversity.”—The Log“Although Pam wrote Sailing to the Far Horizon 25 years after the sinking the story is alive and fresh as much is based on her journals kept during her roughly four-year voyage. Her writing is very descriptive, taking the reader through the adventures and near-disasters as she lived them. . . . A well-told tale and wonderful reading.”—Santana Sailing Magazine"The human stories embedded in this book, poignant and painful, reveal the way that a ship boils people down to their essentials. You really get at the heart of who someone is on a voyage, even before you add the defining element of tragedy."—Jim Delgado, host of National Geographic Television's The Sea Hunters and executive director of the Vancouver Maritime Museum"Several hours after I finished reading this book, I was still recovering. I felt as if I'd been shaken, and punched in the stomach. And yes, that's a desirable reaction."—Gillian Kendall, coauthor with Mark O'Brien of How I Became a Human Being: A Disabled Man's Quest for Independence

I came across this story of the Sofia because a sailing friend of mine, upon whose story my own second novel Waves: A Novel by Dave Bricker is modeled, had an encounter with the ship in the Caribbean during the 1970s. Though my account of that meeting is highly fictionalized (and as yet unpublished - look for "Currents" towards the end of 2011), I became intrigued with the story, and purchased this book to supplement my research.I cruised a small sailboat solo during the 80s and 90's, and though my own story is quite different from Pam Bitterman's, I can appreciate any book that approaches seafaring authentically. Times have changed not only for tall ships, but for cruisers in general. There was a magic "golden age" of cruising that took place at the end of the twentieth century before "yachting" became a sport of the rich. "Shoestring sailors" odd-jobbing their way around the globe are fewer and farther between these days, and the remarkable stories of those people, places and times are worth telling. As a University professor, I see the concept of "just going" to be sadly inconceivable to young people today. That, in itself, is an important message. Likewise, if you go sailing, you'll have the best and worst times of your life. Sailing to the Far Horizon neither glosses over the seasickness, heat, dampness and hard work nor dwells on the almost unbelievably profound beauty of the best of the experience. It's measured and balanced.Though some have accused Bitterman of overwriting, there is a great tradition of Victorian seafaring literature by Conrad, Melville, Dana et al. As a sailor on a tall ship, it's only natural to write with some extra flourish. I found the prose to be an excellent balance between that tradition and today's postmodernist "get on with the story" style. Though the book is set in small type, rather tightly packed, it's well-edited and moves along articulately, without getting bogged down. As the Sofia took on no passengers, only crew, the story asks the reader to "learn the ropes" along the way, but does so without pedantry.Sifting through old photographs, log books and letters, to write and reconstruct any remarkable story is a difficult labor of love, especially when passing decades blend together people and places encountered along the way. Stories such as this are not written for the bestseller list; they are a gift from the writer to those lucky enough to receive them. This is what small presses and self-publishing are all about.

As engaging of a sail adventure tale if there ever were. I was transfixed throughout the book and really didn't want it to end especially as it did.But with all things in life, good tales, good times and often good ships do indeed come to an end.Although true there could had been better editing. And also true the author's use of language is a bit strained and over done but given that this is her first book and the tale she tells is so fascinating and fun I was more than willing to overlook problems in the interpretation of the adventure. I'm just glad she took the effort to put the only accounting of the ship 35 years after it's demise. It made me wish that I hadn't waited so long before sailing in my own life. The biggest suggestion would be to add many more photographs which is so much cheaper in Kindle than printed form.More information on the tales of Sofia in the authors own words can be heard in a very good episode of David Anderson's "Sailing Podcast". She is an even better story telling orallyThe story she has to tell will make you want to join a tall ship commune...or not.

Ms. Sisman's book is a thrilling account recalling the rich tradition of 19th century nautical fiction and travelogues of Melville and Dana, or the rich evocative canvasses of Turner. Like so many restless wanderers in search of themselves, Pamela's memoirs recount an epic journey to exotic ports of call and encounters with people who, without the trappings of our 21st century mall-saturated American culture, manage to maintain serenity, sanity and dignity. At the same time, the book recalls the 70's and the youthful quests all but lost to the "Baby Boom" generation.I recommend this book to anyone who's fascinated with the sea, with travel articles and memoirs, and to anyone who has ever suffered a traumatic experience and lived to move on. I'd welcome a sequel about the reunion of the crew, should this be possible.Gripping, descriptive, yet embued with both nostalgia and horror, "Sailing" riveted me from start to tragic finish.S.Nathanson,Valley Stream, NY

These books are wonderful! my daughter learned by herself many words, just by looking at the pictures and the signs. The best to teach your children how to sign even they can hear. You will avoid tantrums and improve the communication.

I already owned this book for my son, who has a hearing loss, when he was a baby and decided to buy it as a 1st birthday gift for a friend's child. Book is perfect for looking at with your babies of any age to teach them basic American Sign Language. The pictures are colorful and include a child or person demonstrating the sign, as well as the written word and description of the motion. Great book for children! All of the books in this series are wonderful.

My son is a big eater. He loves food. This is greatest advantage for my son to learn. Beautiful!

The books were worth it my grand kids understood and love it when they learn sign language highly recommend

Sight language allows communication before language skills are developed and reduces frustration for the very young.

I love this book because it is pretty common foods that little kids eat. Nice pictures and easy to understand the signs.

I am a baby sign language instructor. The Early Sign Language series by Stanley Collins is one of my favorites. When teaching sign language to your baby it is important to associate each sign with the object or concept it represents. This series of board books is wonderful in this regard because the colorful illustrations make it easy for your baby to make the connections.

Perfect for my needs

I LOVE THIS BOOK!!! This is a collection of winning recipes from the Chicago Tribune's annual cookie contest. The contest started in 1986, but the recipes in this book are from the 1988 to 2013 contests. Almost all the recipes(approx. 98%) have an accompanying photo of the finished cookie. These photos are gorgeous and certainly entice you into reading and or making the recipe.I only used the finest, freshest ingredients in the recipes I made and they all were delicious! If you compromise on the quality of the ingredients used in these recipes, your cookies will NOT taste the best they can be.(maybe mediocre at best.)These are the recipes I have tried so far:1. Chocolate Almond Shortbread (I could not find Dutch Process Unsweetened Cocoa, so I used Trader Joe's unsweetened Cocoa Powder + 1 tsp instant espresso powder-for darker color and more robust flavor.)2. Swedish Spice Cookies(rolled them in Large Grain Decorative Sugar, instead of granulated) These were a FAVORITE!!!3. Caramel Oat Bars

I have enjoyed the Chicago Tribune Holiday Cookie contest ever since it's origin, and am thrilled with this cookbook. Love this cookbook and just in the last week have made many cookies from it for Christmas. Great kolachkies, dark and stormies, friendship spice cookie, thumbprints and more. Great cookbook, with interesting tidbits about origin of entrants recipe, laid out well, and many photos of cookies. A wonderful little cookbook!

A beautifully illustrated book with a number of recipes that I will be trying. I am pleased to see that the first, second and third place winners plus honorable mention cookies from 1988 to 2013 are all in one place, including some of my favorites like pecan tassies and chocolate mint sticks (both 1992). Wish that the 1986 winning recipes were here -- my cookie tray would not be complete without that year's chocolate covered cherry cookies and coconut joys. A worthwhile purchase for anyone looking for interesting recipes with personal back stories.

If only bought for the Eggnog cookie recipe it would be enough. There are a number of recipes that we have tried and they are all good.

This book has many great cookie recipes in it. I'm not sure each one is original but it's a beautiful book with great photographs.

This was a Christmas present for my wife. She loves the book and the recipes.

Lovely cookbook!

Perfect gift for the wife

Review

"A good read for even the most casual theater historian." (Choice)"A complex, rich work... an original, important contribution to the history of the body and to political culture." (American Historical Review)"This well argued text on pantomime offers a fascinating investigation of a subgenre of British theater." (Scriblerian)"He develops his micro-history of the growth and changes in British life with finesse and precision and a rich grasp of detail." (David Mayer Theatre Notebook)"A good example of how to write cultural history today." (Jacky Bratton Journal of British Studies)"For readers who share O'Brien's intellectual priorities, this book may well come to be regarded as an important contribution." (David A. Brewer Modern Philology)"John O'Brien's Harlequin Britain is an original and provocative study of the ways in which pantomime, entertainment, and modernity are entwined in English culture. It adds significantly to our understanding of the role of the theater in the early eighteenth century and makes a compelling case for the significance of theatrical performance to the emergence of the Habermasian bourgeois public sphere."
