I love Dr. Colbert, and I know he genuinely cares about his patients. His advice is sound. This book, though, is kinda disappointing. There aren't that many recipes and some of the ones there are consist of something like steaming vegetables and using various herbs and seasonings on them. Most cooks don't require a recipe for that. I was looking for something a bit more substantial, like some creative ways to get through having the same food over and over. I have found some other recipes online, but I kinda wish I hadn't spent the money for this book. The best thing it has going for it is that Dr. Colbert throws in a lot of encouragement. That is useful.

I was just bothered w/ use of Agave and unfermented soy ( soy milk etc) in the recipesAgave has liver toxicity effect for constant useSoy ( unfermented forms ) -interferes w/ hormone balance especially among females -it has other notorious effects in the health, i.e. predisposes individuals to cancer developmentBut the above does not define the validity and importance of the book itself, I recommend this to those who would like to improve their health and either prevent or manage candidiasisShalom!

Don Colbert does not disappoint. I feel better educated, but also how to deal with the overgrowth of candida in ways that do not necessarily require my PCP/PCMs intervention. This is something that I can do for myself. Taking charge of my body (and the things I have inadvertently caused in it) helps me to feel more empowered over how my body reacts to foods. With each book I read about medical issues and diet, the more convinced I am than ever that we truly are what we eat. Thank you, Dr. Colbert, for publishing these findings.

This book has a good section for evaluating whether you have candida and should consider treating it by diet and a section talking about how to think about doing this diet emotionally etc so you can succeed. The treatment for candida has changed since the book was published so many of the recipes contain food items that I am not allowed on my candida diet. I think the best thing to do is to take recipes you already like and modify them to fit your diet requirements.

Was shipped very quickly, it has some healthy advice for one who is on the journey to overcoming a candida overgrowth/problem, and needs to learn more about candida and or ones condition. That is what i got it for. I read several other books on candida so i could cross reference my research (I have found this is some what a overlooked or ignored medical topic and is not often diagnosed) and this book has a good perspective on the condition, it also suggest other factors to take into consideration, but i do think that it is missing some information on taking care of the condition. But this book was a quick read and can really help point one in the right direction to get educated on this topic.

This is a great, quick, reliable, and sound read. I chose this book in order to find out what natural remedies existed to cure especially sinus infections. I was pleased at his instructions and advisement to consult your own medical professional before taking certain supplements. I like the balance of scripture and sound medical advice. I highly recommend this book!

This is a tiny book that has some good information about candida and has information about the diet if you need it. I've been on the diet for a while, and was a little disappointed by the recipes...some use processed foods like tomato juice, which is hard to find without citric acid. First of all I love Simon Monks books, he is one of the best maker authors out there. However this book is not one of its better efforts. There is a lot of fluff and filler in this short book. There are sections covering basic wiring/C programming conventions like variables, and conditional statements and how to use a breadboard. There are some useful examples but out of the 20 examples 10 are super basic an some are pretty much available in the cloud build IDE environment that you use with the Photon. If you arn't tied to the Photon I would really look into the ESP8266 12-E it has all the functionality, a open environment, and many more available library. I'm not sure why anyone would use a Photon over that device and I have both.

I had a project in mind when I bought a Photon, but I didn't know how to make it all work. The information in this book was exactly what I needed to get my project running. The examples were easy to follow, and I was able to reuse a lot of the code. Overall, I was very pleased with the book, and I'd recommend it to other people looking for a good guide to working with the Photon.

With never using a Photon before, this book was very helpful. I feel like some of the projects in the book were not very practical and needed a lot of extra parts. Fortunately for me I bought it with a specific interest, the "Spark.publish" function. I learned what I needed to and didn't do any of the projects.

Great book with very good examples. I would recommend this book to others.

Was sold as used, but it seemed brand new to me. A better book than a competitor book, in that the author has the examples online.

A great starter book for using the Photon; the first half of the book includes easy to do projects and the last half is more in-depth projects. Overall, a good instruction tool.

excellent technical book, well written. Now I am awaiting my Photon. Still backordered with SparkFun.

I wasn't familiar with Lisa Wingate's books before I read "Before We Were Yours" but I'll be looking for others now that I've read it. I was drawn fully into the story, set in both the 1930s and present day. It follows the story of the Foss children in the '30s and Avery Stafford in present day, and brings to light a horrifying and shameful real-life scandal.From the '30s to 1950, a woman named Georgia Tann, who ran the (Memphis) Tennessee Children's Home Society, stole poor children from their families and newborn babies from single mothers and sold them to celebrities, politicians and others who could afford them. It was all done under the guise of helping orphaned and abandoned children find good homes, but it was actually human trafficking.Avery Stafford finds a puzzling photograph that leads her into an ever more confusing story of secrets and lies inside her upright, respected family. Along the way, she starts to question the man her family has picked for her to marry and her expected role within the family. What follows is a heartwarming story of love, betrayal, memories and staying true to your heart. In addition to the well developed characters and background love story, I liked the realistic view into the 1930s.I really enjoyed this book and learned a lot about a dark time in our history, when being poor was enough to have a family ripped apart forever.

The Tennessee Children's Home run by Georgia Tann did exist for decades. The stories of children whisked away from poor parents, as they walked to school, were born in hospitals, played on their front porches, is a sad tale of the subterfuge used by this woman who made millions on "adoption fees". In many cases, the children were adopted by wealthy parents, satisfied by their obtaining the child they had so wanted. But, there were others, who disappeared forever, were abused in the children's home, while waiting for a home, or more likely, waiting to go back home to their birth families. Few adoptive parents knew about these terrible conditions, nor did the state, nor the birth families, who were left wondering what happened to their children.This novel takes the facts and the recounted stories of the children who later were able to locate family members, when the documents were unsealed in 1995 (the home was closed in 1950). Lisa Wingate weaves a plausible story of a group of siblings caught up in this scheme. It is heart breaking to ponder, but presents a real situation that occurred in our country. Read this, along with "The Orphan Train", to get a sense of how fortunate you may be.

This was one of the hardest books I have ever read. The subject matter is disturbing and unforgettable. It is especially compelling because it is based on something that really happened. That being said, it was well-written and very hard to put down. I appreciated the uplifting ending as it somewhat mollifies the agony of the subject matter.

This is the first book I've ever read by Lisa Wingate, but having read it I will search through her other titles. It was an excellent book! The subject matter was hard, and sad at times, as I knew it would be before starting. I could not put it down because I had to find out how the story ended. It was a glorious book, I'm happy that I read it!

This is a REAL story. It is poignant, sad, unbelievable and a must read to learn about how families were destroyed and children were mistreated in orphanages prior to 1950. The way children were stolen and placed in homes under cruel caretakers is chilling. Children were stolen, warehoused in homes until they could be adopted into "high class" families. The family story centered in Lisa Wingate's book describes five children and their parents who live on a river houseboat on inlet to Mississippi River. They are close to lowest of socio-economic status possible. But,they dearly care for one another, especially the children and their mother. At term with pregnancy for twins when the midwife is unable to deliver the mother, the midwife insists the father take her to a hospital. They are told the twins do not survive, but the mother does. When the mother and father return to their houseboat the other five children have been stolen by the authorities. How the children survive their existence under the ugly supervisor, Miss Tann, their separate adoptions and how they manage to regain contact with each other is an unbelievable story. Andy was not stopped until 1950.

I never (well, RARELY) write reviews, but had to for this book. After YEARS of slowly collecting bits and pieces of knowledge, experience, etc. with different supplementation ideas, I was still confused and overwhelmed. Facebook forums are great for sharing stories, but how to know what you should believe? For example, I had heard a lot about Magnesium, and how it has been so helpful to so many, but there are so many different types - I never did figure out which one was the best. I didn't understand WHY it was helpful, how much I should give, what type, what brand, etc. Dr. Greenblatt does a perfect job explaining in easy-to-understand terms, but still clinically (with tons of references to studies performed worldwide), WHY ADHD kids' brains may be responding the way they do, and how it could be corrected. Obviously, every child is different, but he lays it out in a step-by-step format, so you can start with the #1 thing he has seen results from (adding a Magnesium supplement), and work your way through. He explains different tests that can be run for various problems (gut imbalances, food intolerances, vitamin & mineral deficiencies (or imbalances), etc.). If the test reveals a problem, he has a suggestion for how to resolve it. It is everything I have been searching for in one manageable source. I am looking forward to seeing what kind of results can be achieved. My boy (11) has been on ADHD meds for two years, as has been necessary for school. It worked great for keeping him on task and focused, but the side effects of moodiness when they wear off, and lack of growth (and appetite) are enough that we are taking him off for the summer. This book came at the perfect time, we can try out these natural methods and not have to worry about school suffering in the meantime. I will try and remember to update this review if I see any results from any of the recommendations.

My 4-year-old was just diagnosed with ADHD (but we've been living with his symptoms for about three years now), and I ordered this (audio) book because I am insistent on finding natural help for him- I am adamant about not giving him toxic drugs.Anyway, my husband and I have only just begun listening to the book, but we are in awe! In fact, I had researched Dr. Greenblatt's recommendations prior to receiving the book (my parents sent me his article in a newsletter that they found- which began my search); and we had already begun Magnesium and Lithium Orotate before we started to learn more indepthly about it via the audio book. Wow! We saw a huge difference in just one day- literally (and keep in mind that this is a 4.75-year-old boy who was expelled from Pre-K4 due to his behavior)!Add to that, our son was his former "wild" self one night- a couple of days into implementing the Magnesium and Lithium Orotate- of which we later learned that he did not take his Magnesium supplement during lunch, which I had put in his lunch box for him to take. No wonder he was wild again! Another indication that we're on the right track!We can't wait to delve further into the book to hear Dr. Greenblatt's other recommendations for ADHD, to assist our son even further! My only "qualm" with the audio portion of the book is that it's really a must to have a pen and paper available as you're listening, because Dr. Greenblatt gives specific information- specific types and dosages of products, etc.- that you'll need to write down in order to refer back to it for treating your child (or yourself). It would be much easier to have the actual book in front of you and highlight things you'll need to refer back to.Thank you SO much for your work, Dr. Greenblatt! And thank you so much for the detailed information you give in your book! From a parent's perspective, it feels like you laid-out in detail in your book exactly what you would have prescribed if we actually had an appointment for our son with you in your clinic in Massachusetts. But this book saves us from plane flights and thousands of dollars in order to travel from Arkansas to your clinic. You have no idea! After years of concern, chaos and tears, we finally have hope! And optimistic hope- without medication (which is KEY for us!). You have NO IDEA how comforting that is... and to see results so quickly! We are in awe, and are are forever grateful! THANK YOU!

I thank the authors for bringing this information to a wider audience. Still, I'm glad that I kept researching after reading it. Reading only a couple of chapters of Why Isn't My Brain Working by Datis Kharrazian caused me to scale back my enthusiasm for Finally Focused. By the time I finished Dr. Kharrazian's book, I was convinced that just reading Finally Focused without any other input could encourage an overly simplistic approach to brain health. With more research, it becomes clear that diet changes and balancing blood sugar must come first and that more information is needed before supplementing with vitamins and minerals that have potential for toxicity. Those of us who are sick of doctors treating symptoms rather than addressing root causes must resist the temptation to replace the drug du jour with the supplement du jour. No matter what we put in our bodies, we must thoroughly understand its impact on the complex biochemistry of our brain and body.So far I haven't found much information from other sources about nutritional lithium but I am still looking; Finally Focused provides enough information and support for its efficacy that I think it is worth looking into further. Still it’s unfortunate that Dr. Greenblatt placed his blood sugar chapter toward the end of the book. If we all learned and internalized half of the many ways blood sugar imbalance disrupts almost every bodily function from the head down, I doubt we would ever see candy and convenience foods as harmless and fruit juice as healthy. Reading Dr. Kharrazian’s book makes me understand why we need to start with diet changes to regulate blood sugar and get exercise for better circulation. Rather than telling patients to eat well and exercise as an afterthought, all doctors – but especially functional medicine practitioners – should make clear exactly what they mean by that and why it is vital. After addressing glucose balance and getting oxygen to the brain, patients can be properly evaluated for support.

This is a wonderful read about an amazing journey for one Yemeni American. This book has come out at a timely manner. I want to address the critic that stopped reading the book because of facts regarding Treasure Island. Both Dave Eggers and the critic are correct with dates: Treasure Island started to be built in 1936 (Dave’s date in the book) but wasn’t complete until later (critic’s date in the review). Please if you are going to write such a negative review and discourage people from reading, please be more careful in your facts as well. In any case, the story is amazing and this one area of the book should not stop anyone from reading it.

In 'The Monk of Mokha', Dave Eggers takes us on a modern-day swashbuckling adventure that starts almost uneventfully, in one of the roughest neighborhoods of San Francisco, before taking us to Yemen and the chaos that ensues therein. Our hero, aspiring coffee entrepreneur Mokhtar Alkhanshali, is a real-life Indiana Jones, always taking on his next task with gusto and bravado but ultimately getting backed into a corner at every turn. Like Indy, he uses his wits and sheer willpower (and a lot of luck!) to overcome every obstacle put in front of him.There were parts of this book that I just laughed out loud at and had to pause to regain my composure, and other parts where I just couldn't put the book down, wanting to know what happened next. Throughout I learned a lot about coffee but what I loved most is that the entire motivation of Mokhtar's journey is quite selfless - he wants a better life for Yemeni farmers, and Yemen in general. Like Mokhtar, I am a product of mixed identities, caught between East and West, and I appreciated how he leveraged his advantages and privilege to help people - his people - in Yemen.I think one of the great lessons of 'The Monk of Mokha' is not to be afraid to dream big, and not to give up on your dreams when things aren't going your way. In Mokhtar's story, you'll find a protagonist who is charming, determined, but ultimately, (and I hope he forgives me for saying this!) a little crazy. Not bad crazy. Good crazy. The kind of crazy that can change people's lives for the better. I believe that the people - like Mokhtar - who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who eventually do.In 'The Monk of Mokha', you'll find several cups of crazy. Dave Eggers has struck gold once again with the extraordinary story of the Yemeni-American entrepreneur Mokhtar Alkhanshali, "a poor kid from [San Francisco's] Tenderloin who now has found some significant success as a coffee importer." But that description barely scratches the surface. Mokhtar is the man who introduced now-highly-praised coffee from Yemen to the American market. And he did so after surviving an odyssey through war-torn territory worthy of Ulysses himself.A civil war few outsiders can understandFew Americans can locate Yemen on a map, even though the country is frequently in the news. (It's located at the southern end of the Arabian peninsula across a narrow strait from the tiny African nation of Djibouti. Yemen lies just south of the much larger and richer nation of Saudi Arabia.) A brutal civil war has been underway in the country since 2014. The war pits an ethnic group called the Houthis, who back the ousted former president, against those who opposed him, backed by Saudi Arabia. Saudi warplanes (purchased from the USA) have been dropping bombs (also purchased from the USA) on Houthis and anyone in their vicinity for nearly four years. This has resulted in a massive famine and other deprivations affecting three-quarters of the nation's 28 million people, not to mention thousands of deaths. The already desperately poor country is a shambles. And as if civil war and famine aren't enough, Yemen is host to Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the most powerful remnant of Osama bin Laden's terrorist network, and ISIS. Despite all this, Mokhtar Alkhanshali has managed to grow, process, and export many tons of high-quality coffee from Yemen to the United States.The history of coffee began in YemenEthiopia, the huge country across the Red Sea from Yemen, lays claim to having originated coffee production in the 9th century based on a flimsy legend of a goatherd who chewed on the beans and got high. But the historical evidence is stronger for Yemen's contention that the industry was launched five hundred years ago by "the Monk of Mokha." Mokha (or Mocha) is a port on the Red Sea coast of Yemen. There, according to legend, a Sufi holy man named Ali Ibn Omar al-Shadhili "first brewed the bean into a semblance of what we now recognize as coffee." Over the centuries, cultivation of the coffee plant moved (mostly by outright theft) from Yemen to many other countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Meanwhile, coffee production steadily declined in Yemen both in quantity and quality. When Mokhtar became animated by the obsession to import "specialty" (high-quality) coffee from Yemen, the country's output had gained a reputation for highly uneven quality and often simply bad taste. Coffee farmers there had been abandoning the crop in droves."I will resurrect the art of Yemeni coffee and restore it to prominence throughout the world," Mokhtar had confided to a friend. Astonishingly, that is exactly what he achieved. Fleeing Yemen with a colleague, he personally carried "the first coffee to leave the port of Mokha in eighty years. . . . By July 2017, Port of Mokha coffee was available . . . all over North America, Japan, Paris and Brazil . . . [and] the Coffee Review awarded" one variety of Yemeni coffee "the highest score issued in the publication's twenty-year history."Another superior example of Dave Eggers nonfictionEggers' account of Mokhtar's experience reads like an adventure story. His description of the history of coffee and of its cultivation and processing is equally fascinating. This book is, in truth, another outstanding example of Dave Eggers nonfiction.

I love the way Dave Eggers tells a larger story through a personal lens. As with Valentino Dent (What is the What) and Abdulrahman Zeitoun, he has taken the life of Mokhtar Alkhanshali and crafted it into a book so readable and yet so informative and true it becomes a real page turner. His books are proof of his extraordinary empathy, and this one is no exception. Mokhtar is a young man of Yemeni heritage, who grew up on the mean streets of San Francisco's Tenderloin, but his family was supportive if puzzled by some of his choices. He held many low paying jobs, never giving up hope that he would discover his calling even when at his lowest. It was a chance text from a friend that sent him across the street from where he was a doorman (lobby ambassador) to the Hills Bros. building on the Embarcadero, where he saw the twenty-foot statue of a man in full Yemeni dress grasping a cup of coffee to his lips. Despite the flowers on the statue's thobe (no self respecting native would ever wear that), he was struck by the relationship to the coffee cup, which led him to study about the origin of history of coffee and the role Yemen played in its manufacture. I'm not giving anything away by revealing that he eventually finds success as an importer of coffee from Yemen, but it is that history, his experiences in discovery and marketing, and his reasons for developing the industry in his native land that make this book a real Eggers work. High recommend.
