This book is an excellent history book that will also teach you how to trade stocks. The book covers the stock markets actions decade by decade for the entire twentieth century up to 2006. At the same time he explains what the great stock traders who lived at that time did in the market. He covers all the bear and bull markets and what caused them. I agree with him on the traders he covers, Livermore, Baruch, Loeb, William O' Neal, Nicholas Darvas, Jack Dreyfus, and Jim Roppel. (I would include Warren Buffett and Peter Lynch since the mutual fund manager Dreyfus was included). Every trader included became a millionaire off the market. You better to study? The author recaps at the kind all the similar characteristics that made these men so successful. Here are some of the similarities they all had:1. Only trade in a bull market. Know the market trend.2. Make your own decisions do not be influenced by others.3. Learn from market history.4. By stocks that have strong fundamentals that are leaders in their industry.5. Buy more of a stock on the way up not down.6. Buy stocks at 52 week highs breaking out of correct basing patterns.7. Cut losses short let winners run.I would also study William O'Neal's books and read Investors Business Daily if you want to be a successful trader or investor. It is all you will need. I really became successful trading stocks when I started following the principles in the books written by these authors.

Service & book great!

So he discusses how the US market historically performed and at what times the legendary traders were involved. Little was discussed about the methods of the traders. Good book for entertainment though.

I read the Battle for Investment Survival, by Gerald Loeb, back in the mid-seventies. It is THE all-time classic on successful investing in stocks. This book springboards off of that type of investing philosphy and adds to it with the advice of other great traders. The last few chapters get a bit focused on O'Niel and Roppel, but I think it was because the author had more access to info about them. It stars getting a bit self-serving toward the CAN SLIM method and Investors Business Daily. All in all, it is well worth the price. I have already seen more success as a result of reading it.

Good material in good condition

The book is laid out in decades. Each chapter covers 10 years starting from 1897 to the time to writing. Boik summarizes each decade in about 20 pages or so (about economy and how the legenardy traders did). Each chapter uses the same template and same wording which made it difficult to read and at times I thought I was reading the previous chapter. Boik also promotes his first book way too many times throughout. We get it!!! You have another book. So why 3 stars instead of 1? There are few good words of wisdom about trading.I would recommend skipping this book (unless you want a summary) and read some of the classics:The Battle for Investment Survival - Gerald LoebHow to Make Money in Stocks - William o'NeilHow I Made Two Million Dollars in the Stock Market - Nicolas DarvasBaruch: My Own story - Benard BaruchThe above traders are the featured traders in Boik's book so it would be better to get it straight from the source.

I rated the author's previous book "Lessons from the Greatest Stock Traders of All Time" a four star and titled my review as "A shortcut to must reads about the best stock traders ever". To my disappointment, this latter one is so similar to that. The addition of three more legends (but with relatively less coverage) just didnt help. I felt strongly of being cheated. Even worse, the first one is much better. I would suggest potential buyers to get that instead of this.

This book shows in detail what it takes to go from inconsistent looser to consistent winner with real life examples spanning 100 years. Chapters 8- 12 are the best, detailing Willian O'Neil and Jim Roppel, giving many never before released information on O'Neil and how he made hundreds of millions using CANSLIM. The book shows how CANSLIM was developed, refined and successful over 100 years. With Roppel you get an inside look at the trials and tribulations necessary to make the system work. Very uplifting. The last chapter summarizes the traits all the greats possessed that helped them consistently blow away the market over 100 years. It also gives detailed market responses to every major market moving event, like the Cuban Missile crisis, rising and falling interest rates, G.D.P., and inflation. This is an indispensable reference for any serious investor. The new Market Wizards.

Walt Disney: The Triumph of the American Imagination, by Neal Gabler

Amazon.com Review

Neal Gabler's meticulously researched biography, Walt Disney offers the full story (Gabler is the first writer to gain complete access to the Disney archives) of the American icon. Readers will discover the whole story, witnessing Disney's invention of a "synergistic empire that combined film, television, theme parks, music, book publishing, and merchandise." What fans don't know could fill a book (this book in fact), and we asked Gabler to point out a few of the juicy bits. Read our interview with him, and his "10 Things That May Surprise You" list below. --Daphne Durham 10 Second Interview: A Few Words with Neal Gabler Q: Why Walt Disney? A: When you write about someone as grandiose as Walt Disney, you may tend to get a little grandiose yourself, so forgive me. But I had always set the task for myself to examine the forces that helped define American culture in the twentieth century and those individuals who might be regarded as the architects of the American consciousness. Walt Disney was certainly one of those forces and one of those architects. His visual sensibility is arguably one of the two most important in the last century, along with Picasso's, yet Picasso has received dozens of biographies and Walt Disney had, when I began, not received a single full-scale, fully-annotated biography. I wanted to fill that gap in our cultural studies. I thought that if one could understand Walt Disney, one could go a long way to understanding American popular culture. Q: One thing that strikes you when reading the book is that Walt Disney never had any money. With all his success how is that possible? A: It is astonishing that Walt Disney was always--and I do mean always--in dire financial straits until the opening of Disneyland. The primary reason wasn't that his cartoons weren't making money, because they were--at least until the war in Europe when the loss of that market meant disaster for the features. But even as they were making money, the studio was losing money because Walt was constitutionally incapable of cutting corners, enforcing economies, laying off staff. The only thing about which Walt Disney cared was quality. He thought that quality was the way to maintain his preeminence, though quality also had the psychological advantage of letting him perfect his world. The problem was that quality was expensive. To cite just one example, Walt spent more than a hundred thousand dollars setting up a training program for would-be animators, though even then the return was small because Walt was so picky that very few of the candidates actually qualified to work at the studio. Money meant very little to Walt Disney. It was only a means to an end, never an end in itself. Q: When did Walt first conceive of the idea for Disneyland and what were the initial reactions to the idea? A: It is very difficult to determine exactly when Walt hatched the idea for Disneyland, though he seems to have been thinking about it for a long time, at least since the early 1930s. Certainly by the time he was taking his daughters, Diane and Sharon, to amusement parks on Sunday afternoons in the late 1940s, he had formulated the idea to establish a park that was clean and wholesome and where parents wouldn't be afraid to take their children. The original plan was to build the park on a plot adjacent to the studio in Burbank, where there would be a train, a town square, an Indian village and kiddieland rides, but as Walt's ideas expanded, so did the need for a bigger plot. As for the reactions to his idea, Roy was initially reluctant, as usual, and Walt's wife, Lillian, was firmly opposed, though she had also been opposed to his making Snow White. Still, Walt exaggerated the opposition as a way, I think of elevating his own foresight and determination. In fact, as the plan grew closer to realization, corporations sought to be included as lessees, and even banks, that had been skeptical, became more receptive. When the park opened, it was an instant success. Q: What do you think has been Walt's most lasting impact/legacy on American culture? A: One could answer this question in a dozen different ways depending on one's priorities, but I think his largest bequest is a matter of the American mind. Walt Disney helped change the national consciousness. He got people to believe in the power of wish fulfillment--in their own ability to impose their wills on a recalcitrant reality. That's what Walt Disney did all his life. He managed to replace reality with his illusions--what some people now refer to disparagingly as Disneyfication. He sold us on the idea of control because Walt Disney was himself a master of control. We see the results everywhere--from film to theme parks to virtual reality to virtual politics. You Don't Know Disney: 10 Things That May Surprise You 1. He is not frozen. His body was cremated, and his ashes are interred at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Glendale, California, near his studio. 2. Mickey Mouse's original name allegedly was Mortimer but Disney's wife Lillian objected because she thought it too "sissified." 3. Some of the names originally considered for the dwarfs in Snow White were: Deafy, Dirty, Awful, Blabby, Burpy, Gabby, Puffy, Stuffy, Nifty, Tubby, Biggo Ego, Flabby, Jaunty, Baldy, Lazy, Dizzy, Cranky and Chesty. 4. Walt Disney suffered a nervous breakdown in 1931 and descended into depression after the war, concentrating his attention on model trains rather than on motion pictures. 5. Fantasia was the result of a chance meeting between Walt Disney and symphony conductor Leopold Stokowski at Chasen's restaurant. 6. During World War II the Disney studio became a war factory with well over 90% of its production in the service of government training, education and propaganda films. 7. The studio stopped production for six months on Pinocchio because Walt felt the title character wasn't likable enough. During this time he devised the idea of introducing Jiminy Cricket as Pinocchio's conscience. 8. Walt Disney received more Academy Awards than any other individual--32. 9. Disney modeled Mickey Mouse on Charlie Chaplin and that Chaplin later assisted the Disneys by loaning them his financial books so they could determine what kind of proceeds they should be getting from their distributor on Snow White. 10. MGM head Louis B. Mayer once rejected the opportunity to distribute Mickey Mouse cartoons shortly after Walt had invented the character because Mayer said that pregnant women would be frightened by a giant mouse on screen.

Starred Review. Few men could be said to have as pervasive an influence on American culture as Walt Disney, and Gabler (Winchell) scours the historical record for as thorough an explanation of that influence as any biographer could muster. Every period of Disney's life is depicted in exacting detail, from the suffering endured on a childhood paper route to the making of Mary Poppins. The core of Gabler's story, though, is clearly in the early years of Disney's studio, from the creation of Mickey Mouse to the hands-on management of early hits like Fantasia and Pinocchio. "Even though Walt could neither animate, nor write, nor direct," Gabler notes, "he was the undisputed power at the studio." Yet there was significant disgruntlement within the ranks of Disney's employees, and Gabler traces the day-to-day resentments that eventually led to a bitter strike against the studio in 1941. That dispute helped harden Disney's anticommunism, which led to rumors of anti-Semitism, which are effectively debunked here. At times, Gabler lays on a bit thick the psychological interpretation of Disney as control freak, but his portrait is so engrossing that it's hard to picture the entertainment mogul playing with his toy trains and not imagine him building Disneyland in his head. 32 pages of photos. 100,000 first printing. My five star rating is for the book, not the subject pertaining to it. Neal Gabler has done a masterful job of presenting an incredibly well balanced synopsis of Walt Disney the person. I've read the negative Amazon reviews of this book, just for laughs. They hate the book because it would have caused them to change their opinions of Disney. Obviously they loved the man. Before I read the book I was a victim of the Disney Corporation spin machine that continues to this day to present its creator as the benevolent "Uncle Walt". I believed it. Now I see Disney for what he was. A visionary most certainly. Driving to perfection in whatever he attempted. But he was also a vile and contemptuous dictator in the studio. And something I never realized before, he never drew Mickey Mouse. A former employee of Disney's summed up the man beautifully when he said "Disney's true genius is in taking credit for other people's genius". So appropriate in describing Disney's climb to fame. He stepped over many people to get where he eventually got to. And he never gave those responsible for his fame the credit they so richly deserved.

Gabler's biography of Walt Disney is only for avid readers of history by examining all sides of this famous persons life, and at over 900 pages you have to be dedicated to press on into this well researched but ofttimes sad story.WARNING to die-hard D23 Disney fans... this is not the book you are seeking; because some of the personal struggles and business decisions you don't hear about are carefully described in these pages. The success of this luminary is covered, as are the dark times, the nervous breakdown, the bankruptcy, the anger... and I'll stop there for fear of hurting your feelings by going further into the darkness. Uncle Walt was a genius in every way... including troubled childhood which fueled his driven need to create the "Happiest Place on Earth."If you want to protect the happy Americana image of Walt Disney pick up the wonderfully cheerful biographies written by Bob Thomas or Pat Williams. They offer interesting stories of Walt, teach powerful life-application lessons about perseverance and creativity in a clever way that protects the fairy tale ending, while leaving out the dragons along the way.Hard reading, but explained a lot to me as a life-long resident of Orlando about how one mans driven desire really did change the world.

Having seen the terrific American Experience (PBS) two-parter on Walt Disney's life, I was interested to know more. This biography is very thorough and even handed, not skimming on criticism where it's due. We often forget that Walt Disney was a man before the name came to represent things. What we learn is that Walt Disney came from very little, never made it out of high school, and despite a few amazing successes, struggled to keep his studio alive following movies that failed at the box office. That those same movies are now considered classics that are integral parts of almost every Americans' childhood makes it almost unbelievable that they nearly ran Walt Disney out of the business of animation. All we know is the vast empire that exists today, but it's only because Walt Disney kept pushing forward in his desire to amuse and delight his inner boy in a way that also appealed to the broad need of most of us to have our stunted, immature selves likewise entertained with singing animals and amusement park fantasy lands. Neal Gabler does a great job capturing the boy, the man, the boy-man, and the man-child.Among fascinating personal details are Walt's distant relationship with his father, his somewhat naive idea of women including a marriage that seemed more convenient than passionate, but was faithfully maintained to the end of his life, Walt's warm and cold relationship with his brother and business partner Roy, and the death of his mother, for which he blamed himself.Gabler also touches on accusations often heard about Walt Disney of being a bad boss, a racist, and a Nazi sympathizer. Although he doesn't give Walt a pass, he does make sure to remind readers of the context of the times Disney lived in, and that there were no standards for animation and film workers as movies were just starting to find their feet in the 1920s and 30s.As a film history through one man's life, this book also reminds us that Disney innovated things we take for granted now-- things like sync sound in cartoons, color animation, camera animation stands that allowed depth of field, and storyboards. The world of movie animation would be very different if not for Walt Disney and the talent he fostered in his studio.

So the information given in this book was both encouraging and informative. ( there's a link at the end of part one that allows you to enter your name and email into their system giving you two downloadable PDFs that summarizes how to breed, feed and raise crickets well.) I doubt I'll blend food for my crickets but maybe. The thing I liked about this book was not only that it gave me insight into how to breed and raise my own crickets for a bearded dragon, but also part 2 about Cricket Behavior actually help me to be less grossed out by them. I'm sorry but crickets are disgusting and I don't want to touch them and that's been kind of one of my biggest fears of doing this. We're new to this whole bug touching, feeding, lizards thing and understanding that crickets are actually an intelligent bug made me respect them more which actually took away my fear and grossed out opinion. Anyway I'm glad I bought the book. It was just what we needed to start mentally preparing. We'll get more visual ideas from You Tube from this point forward.

We tried a few times to breed crickets for our son's leopard geckos and had no luck until we found this book. Our crickets used to die within a week of bringing them home, so getting them to live long enough to breed was our biggest problem. I never realized that crickets cared so much about space. It turns out, our small keeper was making them eat each other.Anyway, we finally have a whole bunch of baby crickets. Very thankful that I came across this while browsing my Kindle store. The author writes enthusiastically about the topic too (who would suspect it, since this is a book about crickets?) , but it makes it more pleasant to read.

My husband bought this so we could breed our crickets for our bearded dragon. Unfortunately right after we got a large order of crickets the dragon died, but the book is very detailed and specific.

Complete and to the point. The additional stuff about the history and biology of the insect is very interesting. I would recommend it to anyone looking to provide live feed to their animals.

A bit short for the price but it had the info I needed to know, especially about incubation and rearing.

I am a new bearded dragon owner. I always do a ton of research, about everything. When it came to breeding crickets it was nice for a change to not have to scour the Web for all the info I needed. I found EVERYTHING I needed in this book! My crickets are thriving. Thanks for helping take great care of my new pet! (My chickens will also enjoy the crickets!)

This book was interesting and easy to read. It clearly explains how to raise crickets on a small scale.

I have several reptiles and tarantulas that live on crickets, and I live three hours away from the nearest pet store. This book helped me establish a nice ongoing cricket population to keep my pets healthy and happy. You may have to adjust and bend some of the rules to find what works for you, but this book is one everyone should read if they want to breed their own pet food.

The Assault on Intelligence: American National Security in an Age of Lies, by Michael V. Hayden

Review

“For a longtime spook, Hayden is a breezy and direct writer. He reduces complex issues of cyber and information warfare to essentials, and his polemic is leavened with humor and sympathy. He is at his best, though, when he shifts to a purely analytical tone. He coolly forecasts the direction of America under Trump, explains the intelligence that foreign governments are likely to collect from the president’s Twitter feed and describes the benefits Russia drew from the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting between Kremlin-connected Russian attorneys and senior Trump campaign officials.” — The New York Times “The more important, absorbing and disturbing aspect of Hayden’s book is the analysis from his professional perspective of what Trump and Trumpism mean for the intelligence community. It is sober, nuanced and, quite frankly, scary as hell.” - Mark Galeotti, Washington Post

The Assault on Intelligence is not just another polemic about a truth free President with a lack of intelligence as to information and cognitive skill. The reason is that it can be read in conjunction with his earlier book Playing on the Edge. Playing was written prior to this presidency and so contains analysis that can not be said to be shaded by the inadequacies of the present incumbent in the White House. These books should be read together. The discussions with President Bush regarding detentions, renditions and interrogations and the briefings to President Obama regarding covert programs in Playing on the Edge show presidents intent on learning the minutia of these actions. Though the author was not in office during the present administration it is clear from his background that he knows how Trump is perceived by the intelligence agencies and why. The classic example he refers to is the visit of the President to the CIA when he talked about how he caught the media in a lie regarding the size of his inaugural crowd. This to a group of people who stake their reputations on checking and rechecking facts which is detailed in Playing on the Edge.During the campaign the incumbent turned the intelligence briefers into political props and campaign tools and alleged that he could tell what they were thinking from body language which it is apparent from Playing would never happen.Interesting, in Assault it is made clear that the intelligence institutions took down Mike Flynn, not the Obama administration. From Playing, it is clear why. From the two books it is apparent that Michael Hayden contributes a cohesive understanding of the full picture of the damage the present administration has done to the professionals in the intelligence community. These books make it clear that agree or not with what covert action has been carried out in the past the average intelligence analyst has reason to wonder whether there is a thinking rational being at the other end of his work product. As a politically liberal reader, these texts make it possible to understand the threat to real facts communicated to the incumbent President in what he might do with them. Marge Haskell Instructor, Political Science Berkeley City College

General Hayden writes very well. There are many informed people writing books about the state of the U.S.; but of those I've read none other is laid out in a chronology, vocabulary and style that will make sense to the general public. Hayden's "Assault on Intelligence" moves as only first class prose can.The warning he sounds isn't the first we've heard since Donald Trump took office; but maybe this one is so clear, so fact-based and so chillingly frightening that Americans of all stripes will begin paying attention. If we do not trust and respect our institutions; we have no government.

General Hayden has, with great clarity, laid out the facts and conclusions of the most dangerous threat to our republic. Never in my lifetime did I expect to see an attack on our most important institutions of justice and intelligence. What is most frightening is the blind eye some in Congress have turned to any corruption and crimes that this administration have committed. This is an excellent book and I thank General Hayden for submitting this work to the ordinary American and to the future citizens of the United States who will seek to understand this dark chapter in our country's political system.

An eye opening insider's view of the death of truth and analytical fact based thinking in America in general and the Trump White house in particular. The extent to which Russian exploit of social media impacted the 2016 election is frightening and incontrovertible. The only think more scary is the willful ignorance of the President and those duped by their own shallow ignorance. The world is a complex place where we need the expertise if the best and the brightest. Hayden shines as one of America's brightest most genuinely patriotic citizens. Unlike our current commander in chief who treats truth and facts as inconvenient irritants. Highly recommended.

Incredibly well written, lots of different references to history, culture. Honest.

General Hayden (USAF, Ret.) was an officer of moderation and discipline when he was serving so this book will surprise those who knew him then. He is unsparing in his criticism of President Trump and the Trump Administration. Hayden has concluded that the President and his team have no concept of evidence based decision making or the difference between truth and falsehood. Hayden of course marshals a good deal of facts to support these conclusions. He was particularly incensed when the President on several occasions referred to the members of the Intelligence Community (IC) as "Nazis" without even thinking about the term. Hayden also is angry at the President's obvious distrust and disinterest in national intelligence reports and findings. Well the supporters of President Trump will undoubtedly ignore this book as an pathetic attempt by the "Deep State" to undermine his presidency while his detractors will consider the book as additional evidence of the President's unfitness for the job.

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Tara Publishing, a commune of artists, writers and designers producing handmade books in Chennai (formerly Madras), India, have created a glowingly mysterious and charming volume that combines mythology from central India's Gond tribe with illustrations from three renowned Gond artists who will appear at museums in several U.S. cities this year. Hand screened onto black paper, the colorful, intricately detailed illustrations are almost psychedelic, in some ways reminiscent of Australian Aboriginal drawings. But the forms are recognizably Indian, and despite stylistic differences among the three artists, the pictures reveal a strong and unique Gond artistic tradition where animals, insects and humans merge with and emerge from the trees. There are magical stories about the protective spirits of the Sambar tree, and the serpent and root-entwined snake goddesses holding the earth together. But the practical uses of trees figure here as well: the wood of the thorny Nagphani tree is hard enough to use as a crowbar, and its sap heals sore eyes; the Ganja (marijuana) bush and the Mahua (alcohol) tree are said to be husband and wife. This mingling of the mythic, mundane and poetic gives an alluring glimpse into an integrative worldview that's in poignant contrast to the fragmented postmodern world. (June 1)Correction: In the review of Endgame, by Derrick Jensen (Reviews, May 8), the final sentence should read, "But he has become so disgusted with what he calls 'civilization' that he has more compassion for the salmon than for his fellow humans." This has got to be one of the most unique and unusual books I have ever owned. It brings together two of my favorite things: art and trees. Each page of art in this book is hand silk screened on heavy black paper. Once the pages are silk screened, they are bound together in a very appealing binding. The prints depict trees from India, along with a bit of the history and folk lore associated with each particular tree. This book is a numbered edition of only 2,000 copies. You can see how it was created by going to You Tube and typing in "tara books". Definitely a small scale, local operation. The artists are amazing. And the price is very inexpensive for a book of hand printed silk screened prints.

This book is a pleasure to read, touch and see. The art is exquisite line work in bright colors on black handmade paper. The ink has a presence. The narrative is poetic and tells tales that blur the borders between trees, humans, and creatures. It's beautiful enough to defy description. It's as much a work of art as it is a compelling book. If you'd like to read more about Tara books, check out my blog post: http://www.joycorcoran.com/2014/10/tara-books-slender-art-galleries-on.html

The book was very nice I ordered it for my wife for a birthday present $49.89. I looked at this book again 3 days later and I can buy the same book for $29.93 from the same supplier. Seems very fishy!

This handmade book of individually hand-screened pages of art is exquisite. I don't know how they can do it for the price. The short tales of each of the trees are intriguing and divulge the little known secrets of very lively nocturnal trunks and branches. We find that we're not the only ones hanging by a limb. A gem of a book that leaves one breathless.

This book's art work it incredible. I often contemplate the idea of turning some of it into wall art but I can't bring myself to take a page away from the book. I would love to buy an extra one just for that purpose. If you are into artistic books, this is worth adding to yours and your kids collection.

I just had to have this book. Because of the title, because of the illustrations. I keep it open on my desk so that it is available to me. I turn the pages from time to time so that I am looking at something new and different. It inspires me.

The Gond tribe of central India believe that our lives are inextricably linked with that of trees. This handcrafted masterpiece tells their stories with exquisite artwork and haunting prose. I am so glad I own a copy.

There is a difference between "were and where, right and write, there and their." It matters.Constantly having to stop reading for "I man" is not easy. It's easy to relate to dem, des, Ras Tafari, dreadlocks and connections to old Ethiopia. Just can't relate to bad writing, incomplete thoughts and unfinished sentences. The writer needs mystery in the story not backword thoughts or confusing and mixed up characters by using the wrong character name. Disappointed.Good background and history, but that is not enough.

This is a great Sci-fi Afrofuturistic tale set in England. I learned a great deal about Rastafarian culture and history. Prior to reading this story, I never known that much about the Rastafarian religion besides the fact they smoke weed. I also liked the futuristic setting that Mr. Marks creates along with the technology he describes. I can actually envision a future setting just like the one in this book. I also like to see people of African descent as the main characters instead of sidekicks or background characters. I don't want to go into the plotline because I don't want to give away any spoilers. Hopefully Mr. Marks will create a sequel to this story. I would like to see these characters developed in future installments. Bravo Mr. Marks!

My favorite writers use social issues to catch my attention. Anton Marks is now on my list.Dystopian world, current events, people fighting for their rights and freedoms. Add in descriptive phrases to portray all of the above. I'm sold.

Had a lot of culture I was vaguely familiar with. Was hoping for a Beanie Boys or Red Stripe joke and am sad there wasn't one. Will say more on the review show.

A decent read

a very serious story i wasn't prepared for, however, i thoroughly enjoyed it. i'm not knowledgeable about the subject matter so the story line was sometimes hard for me to follow, but i finished it and i really liked it. good strong characters and story.
